Is Panera a new chain? I'd never even heard of it. I had to google it and the closest one to me is 280 miles away. Don't think I'll be giving them a try for lunch tomorrow.
We've had Paneras in Florida for several years. They're okay. Not fabulous, but okay. They give the impression of being healthier than Chilis, but are about the same price range for lunches. Kind of a cross between a Starbuck's and a real restaurant.
Panera did originate in St. Louis. We've had it in Pittsburgh for about 12 years. I thought it was everywhere. Love the potato soup, reminds me of my mother's.

The potato soup is very good. I love the baguette that comes w/ it.
The bagels are ok & the rest of the menu has a little bit to be desired.
They have a myPanera card now...after one or two visits they always offer a free item...and that slightly encourages me to go back.
We have Paneras & Chipotles on every street corner here. They are both always packed.
I don't like Panera. I've tried it twice and was disappointed with the quality and flavor of the food both times. Chipotle on the other hand....LOVE that place. So delicious!
We have Panera, but I've never had it. They are opening up more and more of them in Orange County. I had to qualify "we." I don't think there are any in my general area, but that isn't surprising. Orange County has oodles of them.
I like that Panera offers an alternative to typical fast food. I can't tell you how many times I wished I could just buy a sandwhich instead of fried food before Panera opened.

It has it's roots in Denver though and is still really popular here......I like Chipotle but the serving is just huge. There's a website somewhere that calculates how many calories are in that Chipotle burrito (depending on what you put on it). I figured that out a number of years ago and went Haven't been too often since then. Even splitting one, it's an awful lot.
Panera - meh...as far as "fast-ish" foods go...it's not bad. Some of it I like better than others but today I had a decent sized Greek salad with a small multigrain baguette and spent about $5-6 total for lunch - just water to drink and no need for a tip. Not bad for when you are pinching pennies but still want a small lunch out. I didn't want to sit in a regular fast food joint nor did I want to eat typical fast food....It fits a nice niche.

They used to be. McDonald's was one of their largest investors for almost a decade but they split completely in 2006. Pretty crazy though that they were so intertwined for so long considering how completely different they are in their approach to food. I love that Chipotle uses quality ingredients. McDonald's on the other hand...
