If you give a gift such as concert tickets, to a couple, are you also expected to pay for their babysitter so they can attend the concert? This situation recently came up with some younger friends and I am curious about what other people think.

A college student that I know splurged to give her older brother and his wife (who both have full time jobs) two tickets to a concert that he wanted to attended. Normally she would give a small gift, or a home made gift, to her brother for his birthday but spent at least four times what she would normally spent on his gift to buy two concert tickets. And, while he was (mostly) appreciative of the gift, he informed her that "it was not polite to buy tickets for a night out unless you also include enough money to pay for a babysitter."

Frankly, I had never heard of an etiquette rule like that. So, was she in the wrong or was he just making that up or is this something new or what?

Thank you for any input.

Oops, maybe this should be in Non-romantic relationships instead, but I was wondering what people who needed to pay for baby sitters (parents) thought about this issue.

I've never ever heard of that! I was a babysitter for years and most parents already pour so much into their kids before themselves most would be over the moon thankful and not think twice about paying some $50-$75 (thinking really out there babysitting price wise like Seattle). Still....you're saving how much for a night out to enjoy yourself. And so it doesn't matter because ITS A GIFT!

This is no different then people complaining that the person didn't give them gas or parking money to go to a free event or getting mad someone did't pay for a dinner as well. Maybe her big brother was trying to guilt trip his sister into providing free babysitting....which is still extremely rude and shouldn't be considered normal in the slightest.

No. Was she also supposed to supply gas for the car, and the price of their clothing, and the price of the meal they would eat before the concert?

It would, under the circumstances, and if she's near by and able to, be nice if she offered to babysit for them. And then never get them anything like that again!

Never heard of such a thing.

The brother's response regarding supposed etiquette, was a much larger faux-pas (even if it were true) than the one gifting tickets.

What an ungrateful jerk.

And my guess? I'm reading between the lines here, and guessing there's bad blood between the wife and sister, and it was the wife who was giving him grief about this and he was passing it along.
