Oil City is like a lot of small towns in Western PA. A once fabulous town that now specializes in diversity - Lots of drugs, high crime, and catering to the section 8 crowd. You can see why the Democratic Party is so popular in PA.

LMAO! Don't think that sr1243 is picking on *just* Oil City, there.

It is sad, but true, that the region is fostering the wrong kinds of diversity. Back in the postwar '40s through early '70s, and maybe even into the early '80s, this whole region had decent employment and even the small communities thrived. And if you looked at the demographics, you had, as a whole, a better class of people living there. Now, the elderly holdouts and the leading edge of the baby boomers are whose money and culture is holding together what's left of their communities. And the younger people, particularly those with children who rely on transfer payments from the government are a lower class with welfare recipient values and the trash mentality, and it's turning the communities into trash. And the gangs from Detroit and elsewhere are moving in and spreading their dumbed-down ghetto carp lifestyles, too.

Added: People who live in these decaying communities are quick to defend them. But, what you have to remember, is that decay if often gradual and the people who never moved don't see it until it's really "past gone." Those of us who lived in the more thriving towns and cities and came back are quite appalled by how trashy and low-class they've become in their post-industrial decline. 20 years ago, heck even 15 years ago, this whole region had some forward movement. But that is pretty much gone now. Smicksburg, PA, is another small and very rural community that tried to re-invent itself as an artist and antique vendor mecca. But I was last there in summer of 2005 or 2006, and many of the dealers and artists had their building up for sale and were trying to gracefully call it quits. Without buyers who have disposable income, all business owners will have a difficult time making a living and staying in business.

That is dead on. While visiting the Oil City area I noticed that there are only basic discount stores in the region. Real shopping would be at least a 30-40 min drive. Franklin seems to be doing more to get businesses started in the city but it still caters to the Vouchers Welcome crowd. The best thing either Franklin or Oil City could do is stop with the low income renters and tax cuts for homeowners. The area is gorgeous but the blight and drugs are killing the region.

I grew up in Oil City in the 60's and 70's, then moved back to Oil City in 2009. I am so glad I did. After 30 years in the Philadelphia area it is so nice to be in a place where folks say Hi. This is a place where people go out of their way to help others, be considerate and still take time to listen to the response when they ask how you are doing. Yes, the town is struggling - but these days what small town isn't? This is a terrific place with bike trails, the river, beautiful scenery and nice people!

Every year the old Hay Rake Baseball League has a "smoker" with a retired MLB player. I love it, got to see Steve Blass for about 10 bucks at the VFW. I love small towns.

What happened to oil? You would think at $105 a barrel someone could make money.

An old-timer from there or the Titusville area was interviewed on TV. His dad or grandpap started the well he works. He gets 2 to 4 barrels a day.

The decayed & condemned Brody Block in Oil City has now been sold three times in recent months ! First two buyers must have avtually looked at it & backed out. The most recent buyer is some religious sect or non denominational religous group established in 2005-06, located in California.....OH BOY !
