honobob, I didn't mean to "like" your comment... In my experience, people make their OWN problems, and I'm not inclined to bail them out. You're correct that they also make problems for helpless animals through their selfishness and stupidity, but the animals aren't to blame for that and deserve our help... They are completely defenseless, and I wish to do all I can to alleviate or end their needless suffering.
Interesting thread. I read an article several months ago that said that more and more of us Americans are choosing to remaining single and childless---mostly by choice.
I think that if you have no partner and no kids that you should adopt a kid who has nothing and no one. Give them the gift of family, and leave them the money and the stuff also.
What do people plan to do with heirloom quality furniture? My kids would trash it faster than they can get to Wal-Mart to buy something 'new'. I would like it to go to someone who would appreciate it, take care of it, and pass it along. But who?
If heirs won't want your stuff themselves, tell them to work through estate sale specialists, consignment shops, yard sales, local churches and charities, and Goodwill stores, in that sort of order. After that, it's 1-800-GOT-JUNK.
Exactly what I was thinking while reading this. It's sad, in my opinion, how little people care for their fellow man.
I have a dream/plan to create pocket communities for carefully vetted working poor and perhaps kids aging out of the foster care system. Part of my money when I die will go to continue these.
The 'fellow man' has hurt their fellow humans more than a dog, animal or horse.
I am more wary if a human being hurting me over a stray pitbull, chow, rotweiler, or any other dog deemed vicious.
How someone decides to leave their money shouldn't make you sad and it doesn't mean people don't care for their fellow man.
What are the provisions for your animals, do you mind me asking? I have pets & probably always will have and have been wondering what to do about that.
Regarding pets I had the attorney set up a pet trust which is legal so they are taken care of. It also was to help who ever had them have some money for vet care if needed.
I have a few charities that will get my money: the National Brain Tumor Society, Smile Train, and an organization that provides body armor for military and police K9s. I would love to fund an endowed chair at the university where I got my Ph.D. but I probably won't have *that* much money so it will probably just be a scholarship. And yes, it will be named after me. :-)

Just a note.......
The couple who will receive my 20% are the ones who will be taking any pets that I have at the time of my death into their home to care for.
And that 20% is a LOT more than they could ever need for daily care and vet bills.
