That is very good considering your income. Do you drive a car? Does your company have a pension plan? All your sacrifices have gotten you ahead of the game. Don't forget to splurge once in a while.
Thanks! Yes, I bought a 4 cylinder pickup in 1991 and drove it 18 years. Replaced it with a Miata 10 years ago and it's still going strong. Keeping transportation costs down is so important when you don't make much money.
Good advice about splurging, though. My next car will be much nicer.
No pension plan, but I'm saving 30% into a Roth 401k plus a 7% company match.

Yeah, I gotta agree with the bolded. I was able to keep my last car until it was 20 years old because I found an apartment a block away from my job 11 years ago. It was one of those rare instances where I got a lifestyle upgrade and saved money at the same time.

i remember back in the late 1980's i bought a volvo 740 new because of their gret reputation . it was a horrible car ...the only thing i did not replace in the 7 years i owned it was the glove compartment door .. i junked it after 7 years when the rear failed ...what a crappy car ....
from that point on i bought only new cars and sold them after 5- latest 6 years and bought another ... in fact i only bought new cars starting in 1974 ... it's been that way now for decades ... i like my cars

Nothing wrong with that if you can afford it. My first used car was a piece of crap Ford Escort. I vowed I would do my research and only buy something reliable with my next car--and I did.
My next car I bought when it was 4 years old and had it until it was 20 with 178k miles on it. Very little went wrong with it and I didn't take the best care of itl but I still had it 16 years. It helped that for a lot of those years I lived a block away from my job.
I think a lot of people were like I was. They buy a lemon as their first used car and then swear off all used cars. That's fine if you can truly afford a new car--but a lot of people can't.

We were fortunate to graduate with almost no debt (I had a big scholarship and worked in college and wife had parents pay for hers) then have an employer pay for wife's masters degree.
We've contributed a ton to our 401Ks since the beginning and completely renovated our house ourselves and then sold it and moved to a less expensive house.

I had an '89 Ford Escort that was pretty awful. But after that I still bought used but stuck with my Geo Prizm (Toyota Corolla clone made in the same factory), then upgraded to an actual Corolla. The Prizm was a good little car with almost no issues that I took to 178k miles despite not treating it as well as I should have. The Corolla is proving to be good as well.
