When I was young and making minimum wage I most certainly had to scrape buy.
The thing is, I didn't allow myself luxuries, the equivalent of a smart phone or a pay TV package today, for instance, and I most certainly didn't have a baby.
In fact, I not only had a checking account but a savings account.....because I did without and lived well below my means.....something so many people refuse to do.
I didn't rent the apartment I could barely afford, I rented the dump that allowed me to have money left over at the end of the month, no eating out or entertainment expenses, EVER, drove an old beater car, got out a needle and thread and repaired my old clothes instead of buying new ones, etc., etc., etc.
You don't budget to spend every cent you have, you budget to have money, however little, left over. And when you have saved a nice little chunk of money, you don't reward yourself by buying something you can do without, you just keep saving and saving and saving. That way, when an emergency comes along, it isn't a catastrophe, you have the money to pay for it.
If you had money left after necessities you weren't scraping by.
If the check had not been cashed, the employer could stop payment and issue another check. But, since the check was cashed, the robber was no longer stealing a check the employer issued, but the cash in an employees pocket.
Do not ask your employer for another check. This has nothing to do with them and any employee that would attempt to make this their employers problem should be ashamed of them self.
I am in charge of payroll and when our EE's come to me with this nonsense I want to ask them...what the heck are you thinking? If they could stop payment that would be one thing, however, since the check has been cashed your employer can't do anything for you.
Renting a 'dump' in order to have anything left IS scraping by....
Actually, having your own apartment--even if it's a dump--is a luxury, especially if you're making minimum wage. You can barely rent a room on minimum wage here in the Bay Area, let alone a dumpy apartment.
