i have found it really tough to get a better than 1 cent per point value when redeeming miles for airfare. my brother has had a lot more success getting those "saver fares" so he loves it. he is willing to do more work on that end than me. i am going to mention to him to get the chase unlimited because i think he is mostly using his united explorer which mostly gets 1 point per dollar.
i did have an issue once where united canceled my tickets and they said that if i had booked through them they may have helped me out more. so i do try to book directly these days but its fine if i dont.
All of my 5 different mileage redemption flights were "saver fares", but one of the main reasons I got them was that I plan way in advance, almost a year out or basically the earliest I can book a ticket with my miles and I'm pretty flexible.
My best "value" I ever got for my miles redemption was my first one, a ticket from Tucson to LAX to Sydney and back on United over a three week span (Christmas/New Year's, 2006/2007) which only cost me 50,000 miles (now its 60,000 miles) and the ticket price, because it was the peak time in the peak season, would have been at least $2,000 and up, so my rate of return was at least 4 cents.
All of my mileage redemption trips, I got at least 2 cents and up value wise.
This seems like the best combo of keeping things simple (since all 3 cards are with Chase) and maximizing value. I'm going to call and see if Chase will convert my Slate card to the Freedom Unlimited so that I can have the golden trio

You shouldn't convert it because you'll miss out on the $150 signup bonus
I use to have this american express card that gave you 5x points during the nba finals and nba all star weekend. But they discontinued it. They gave me a new card but I haven't activated yet and probably won't.
It was a nice looking card. The major drawback is that you cannot redeem your points for cash.
But instead of giving me my old plan which was 1 point per every dollar spent except for NBA all-star weekend and NBA Finals-where I accumulate 5 points for every dollar spent, they are offering me 1.5 points on every purchase year round.
