Everyone I know who owns bars lost money that weekend.
It was a dud because local entrepreneurs may not have known about who Catholics world-wide are today. They never looked at who the people are, I guess, when The Pope travels to various countries. Yes, they were frugal because they were mostly poor and spent all they had, more than likely, to get here. For some of them or many of them it was once in a life time event. And it was not about having fun. They were pilgrims.

Why would anybody think people who are coming to see the Pope are going to hang in bars? Common sense would dictate that this event would draw the family-oriented and seniors.

And maybe if Center City restaurant prices weren't so ridiculously high people would have patronized them. Sounds to me like the 'holy and frugal' were 'financially intelligent.' I'd bet the RTM sold more than their usual amount of sandwiches and ice cream that weekend.

Nobody lost money on the Pope - they just didn't make what they expected.

I enjoy your mocking, but there's a lotta truth in it.

Personally, we mostly judge an area's cuisine by their sandwiches. Think Cubanos and fried grouper sandwiches in Florida and tri-tip sandwiches in San Diego. Ain't nobody got time for a $38 pork chop platter.
You can pretty much get a good seafood platter or Italian dinner anywhere (or at least adequate).
