Mesa is quite large. The city of Mesa keeps annexing any abutting areas in county.

I don't place much credance on any survey that just used statistics.

And note. In the news awhile back. Police officials were manipulating crime statistics in Mesa.

Better do more research other then on report that just used statistics which may have been tainted.

It is amazing what some officials will do for a promotion, state aid, and federal grants.

Is Mesa growing geographically? It is bordered by Tempe on the west, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community on the north, Chandler and Gilbert on the south, and Apache Junction on the east.

I figured the article was talking about size by population. Geographic size isn't very relevant to crime. I don't think Mesa got any huge bump in population by any annexing of areas not part of Apache Junction to the east.

Mesa isn't all that small in population; it has more people than some more famous cities such as Atlanta, Georgia or Miami, Florida. Mesa is the nation's second largest suburban area, behind Long Beach, California.

Yes and no.

Although they are large cities of their own rank, San Jose and Fort Worth could count as the largest suburban areas because they take a back seat to the more famous San Francisco and Dallas, and are very suburban in comparison.

But not counting these two, you are correct that Mesa is the second-largest suburban city in the country.

Glendale, AZ was 10th on the same list last year. The City-Data crime index is 409.7, there were 12 murders / 100K. 5.2 car fatalities/100k.

Mesa in comparison had 15 murders / 100K and 4.3 car fatalities. C-D crime index is 286.

IMO, it's not really fair that Peoria isn't big enough to be in the running. With only 6 murders / 100k; 1.8 car fatalities / 100K, and a C-D crime index of only 218.9 it would probably qualify as one of the safest cities, if not the safest in AZ. But that doesn't stop some people from occasionally saying Mesa is the safest city in AZ because Forbes says so.

I agree, they really need to separate core cities from suburban areas in these rankings.

Suburban cities like Mesa, Glendale, and Peoria should be given their own list.
