Jay's was open in south Phx long before 64-65...wish I could see the photo.

KOMA played their music at a slightly slower speed than other stations. "Bennie and the Jets" sounded odd. The station's still there in OKC, but as an FM oldies station. The old KOMA changed format to news-talk and is now KOKC, still at 1520 AM. An equally good AM station in the 70s was XELO, or X-Rock 80 in Ciudad Juarez, 800 KHz and quite strong right after sunset. Used to listen to them a lot since KDKB went off the air at sunset.

I still have a copy of the local talent collection, "Arizona Sounds Volume 1" from 1977, with Bob Meighan, Fairweather, Fester Plugg and the Stilt Chickens among others. Only $.93 at the time. It was kind of a joke but you couldn't beat the price; bring that up because of a previous post mentioning Bill Compton and Toad Hall. I remember Toad Hall did TV and radio commercials (like Pat McMahon) as well as DJ. Linda Clayton was another 70s/80s DJ at KDKB, which seemed to play just about anything... a very eclectic playmix, maybe Jerry Jeff Walker followed by Hendrix followed by Toto followed by Nugent.

By the way, what's the current status of the Westward Ho?

I remember being able to see the Guaranty Bank from forever away! I believe it was the tallest building in town!

Bill's records was at Park Central and also Uptown Plaza.

Some others, Augies, Bruce's, Burnett's, Mehagian's, Sandy's, Wallich's Music City, Recordland.

Bills Records was also in Christown-highest prices in town as I recall.
I used to buy my records across the concourse at JC Penny's. (yes they had a record dept.) Heres an old ad from Bills for the grand opening

we were YE9-2511 - had a party line, used to listen in on the neighborhood gossip. Always some women talking about their hair or something equally fascinating.

I do! I have a story about them too. In about '72 I was out walking in a cornfield down in Laveen with my dog...all the sudden something shot up in the air followed by my dog...it was a peacock...I wrapped it in my jacket and brought it home then though 'now what'...called Roer Birdfarm and they came out and picked it up and gave it a good home. I had those tail feathers for years after too.

Just curious as to what you mean "I'm wondering if it was an LDS movie?" lol I've never even know LDS movies to have "bizarre plot lines". Sounds like a very strange movie though.
