Parked at the zoo and biked across, wasn't hard at all, mostly due to the fact that it was generally against the flow. Pic from A Mountain.
Wow, I'd almost forgotten that NB traffic had the surface street, and when there was any kind of release or waterflow due to rainfall, the Mill Ave bridge became a very narrow two-way.

That picture... wow, amazing how much the north bank has changed.

I was about 8 years old when those floods happened. I remember my dad having to get up at three am to make it to work in Litchfield Park (we lived about a mile south of ASU), and that traffic heading anywhere north of the river trying to jam itself over the Mill Ave bridge made getting to school for my older sibs at Tempe High pretty difficult.

Oh how lovely to see this old photo of Central and Roosevelt. I went to school with Andy Chuka, Jr. That photog studio had a huge presence in our earlier days. My parents lived at 402 W. Roosevelt where I became more than a glint in someone's eyes. Now it's a business that was in my business circle before I retired. Life goes in circles.

In the '60s, I remember Andy Chuka's business being on the east side of 1st Street a couple of blocks south of McDowell (someone please tell me if my memory is faulty). But what I most remember about Andy Chuka is seeing him at a Shriner's Convention I worked at in the early '60s when I was in high school. I was doing some kind of work right next to Andy and some of his pals and what I most vividly remember is how funny he was and what a foul mouth he had (even by today's standards!).

andy was a good friend of my father. He really did love the shriners. Andy looked like albert einstein and was always laughing. His business was picture framing and printing. He moved to 1st street after the central building was torn down. his son contnued the printing business. Andy also had a store downtown in late 30s.
