My husband and I are considering a move to the Scottsdale area from the Baltimore. We are a young couple, 25 and 30, and want to find a place that has a lot to do, but it is also a great community to start a family. We have been told that Peoria is nice as well as North Scottsdale. I'm wondering if anybody has any recommendations or advice for us. We will be coming to area to scope it out before the move but we would like to narrow the field a bit.

Thanks for your help.

Scottsdale is good, as well as Gilbert. It depends on which area you will be working and commute time.
There is a nice area on all sides of the valley so you should be able to find something with an easy commute time. Do you have a job lined up?

Depends on what you mean by "lot to do". Gilbert is a very nice suburb with lots of nice new family oriented neighborhoods, but I don't see it as having a lot of "entertainment infrastructure". Scottsdale, Tempe, parts of Mesa, Peoria, parts of Glendale, parts of Phoenix, are all good potential locations. Twiggy is right, a lot will be dictated by where you are working.

Well, my husband is a Financial Advisor and works from home the majority of the time. I am finishing my teaching degree and would like to find a position within a great school district. So, as of now, we are pretty open to the area. Our budget for our first home would be about $300k, though I'm noticing that if we got outside of Scottsdale that would go a little farther. Coming from Baltimore, a low crime rate is alsa very important to me!

None of the suburbs have a high crime rate. Yes, your money will go further outside north Scottsdale, probably, but north central Scottsdale, around McCormick Ranch, etc., might be better in terms of $$$.

Teaching jobs VERY much up in the air right now. Not a very good market for that at the moment. Districts just issued hundreds of statutorily-mandated layoff notices a couple of weeks ago-- it is unknown at this point how many of those may actually still have jobs next year.

I think, "Gilbert," will be your best bet then. Google it and you will find it's a pretty good city for families which in turn will keep you teaching. Great views of the mountains, a lot of parks and festivals. I think you would tire of the Scottsdale night life rather quickly, and it's a lot of extra money to pay for living in a posh party environment if you don't use it a lot. Being a teacher I don't see how you could go wrong in "Gilbert".
