"Exactly when did Surprise become a dangerous place?"

Surprise is not dangerous. Violent crime is rare. I have lived in Surprise for six years and that is one of the reasons that I like it here. The most recent crime in my subdivision was the theft of some Christmas lawn ornaments in December. They better call in Elliot Ness.

I have lived here my whole life...and its the same story everytime. For everyone who is new to the area just know that people who live in the east valley especially snotsdale consider the rest of the metro to be a crime riddin scum ghetto....when in reality most are just working class neighborhoods. There are some dangerous places but nothing like these people make it out to be. Surprise, Peoria, Avondale, Glendale (south glendale near the tracks is kinda bad) are all good places to live.

Default looking for the perfect retirement

I can't afford to be in the expensive retirement communities. All I want is an apartment shared by senior residents so I don't have to worry about "the young people" having weekend parties. Too damn old for that. Can you suggest the best area, town, (no big city) suburb of Phoenix is fine. I appreciate any suggestions and I thank you in advance.

I'm not sure what you are looking for. An apartment complex with all senior residents? Sharing an apartment with seniors?

Other than in Sun City, Sun City West, Leisure World area in East Mesa, Youngtown, etc., I'm not sure where you would find any number of complexes with primarily senior residents. I'm sure there are some scattered all over the Valley that, more by chance than by design, have primarily older residents. In the areas with large numbers of seniors, there are some older apartments that would not be as expensive. I recall seeing some along Power Road near Leisure World, just as an example.

Perhaps others will chime in with suggestions in their neighborhood. You might want to start your own thread with a title that will tell people what you are looking for-- you may get more responses that way, than tagging on to the end of this old thread.

I suggest you focus on the schools, especially as a young family. Go to Greatschools.com and search the best schools for your kids...and they also show there the demographics of the school district. Where you find the good schools, you find one of two things: money or safety...or both. My cousin lives in nice East Mesa near Gilbert and is a non-Mormon; and his house/cars have been vandalized more in 2 years than when he lived a few blocks from Guadalupe for 20 years. Search the schools, would be my advice.

Glendale is on the northwest side of Phoenix.
Chandler and Gilbert are on the southeast side of Phoenix.

The beer is always cold, and you can buy really good Koby Beef steaks at AJ's, a gourmet store owned by Basha's. (Not the Koby Beef from Japan, and they are not as good and tender as Japan's Koby Beef, but they are good. They also have Koby beef hamburger that is great to barbque.

I like Fountain Hills myself. It's a neat little city on the east side of the hills from Scottsdale. Has the fountain and quaint little shops. A little expensive for my wallet.
