I am relocating and scared out of my mind reading about how hot it is there. I live in the San Fernando Valley and lived here my entire life. Its hot its cold and the temps vary. Any advice to calm my jittery nerves? Is it really THAT bad?
Thanks!

I lived in Southern California for seven years, and some people really make more of it than it is. June-September are very hot, July and August especially. Those two months are hot enough to restrict you from doing some activities. I moved out here once from CA and once from WA. Moving from CA was by FAR easier than from WA. Not as much of a shock! I agree... you'll be fine.

The Phoenix metropolitan area is growing exactly like So Calif has been for the past 25 years. Soon it will catch up to the LA metropolitan area, so you'll feel at home here.
One day it will be a solid line of houses from Phoenix to LA. You'll never know you left one city for another.

Phoenix will never catch up to So Cal...Which has about 20-24 million people.

Coming for the Valley should not be a big culture shock. Just remember the hot days that occur in the Valley because it gets hot there. Then realize it is that way all summer in Phoenix. No cool downs at night (like we get in Cali)...It remains 90-120ish all day long.

I'm coming from Palmdale to Surprise. I already spend a great deal of time in Phoenix so I know what to expect.

It's not really that bad, unless your me . I thought I knew what I was getting into when we moved to Chandler 3 1/2 years ago from San Diego. Boy was I wrong and I've been regretting the move ever since. I'm a Mid-Westerner at heart and a four seasons kind of guy so I have no one to blame but myself.

It is nice between Oct and April, but the rest of the year is not to my liking at all. I'm on the hunt for a new location but haven't been able to get the wife onboard yet. I know, I know, don't let the door hit us on the way out .

Ed

There is no other way to put it; the summer is plain uncomfortable, and at pretty much all times day or night during the red zone (June-Sept). There are two different issues though; uncomfort and safety. I am somewhat of an extremist-- I make an effort to do outdoor exercise every day, just not during the bulk of the day when the sun's rays are the most intense. The rule I am sticking to this time of year is I'll go outside, walking or bicycling extremely early in the morning-- for about 1.5 hours after sunrise (5:15-6:45am)-- which I actually did this morning, or the last 1.5 hours before sunset (6:00-7:30). Even during these limited hours, I still put on tons of sunscreen, wear a hat, long pants and covered shoes (sweaty, yes, but safer for your skin than flip flops) and drink tons of water. If you are actually able to wake up at 5:00 in the morning, the temperatures are very manageable-- but not for long. The very late evening and at night it is still hot as hell, and it does not cool off.

I grew up in the San Fernando Valley too.

Imagine the worst heat wave of the year there. 3 or 4 days of way over 100 degrees, sometimes over 110. Now instead of 3 or 4 days of this, imagine 3 or 4 months. Thats Phoenix in the summer.
