I'd really like to mess with Einsteins image but I'm guessing that is a mosque or other religious site?

Its subtle, as I normally prefer. I thought about some highlight recovery from the foreground as well. The most significant change is to the right side of the building (shadow), and use of spot healing tool to remove blemishes due to dust on the sensor. A minor darkening of the sky as well (but barely).

I also prefer the fisheye-ish distortion from this angle, so I didn't change that either. I could have done without the frame for a better comparison though (but I used Photobucket editor for it after having the picture re-uploaded.

I hope to find some time tonight to work on the Igloo by Floyd. I'm going to enjoy this thread quite a bit!

It is a 500-600 year old tomb, of a Mughal emperor in New Delhi, India (he was the great grandfather of the emperor who built the Taj Mahal couple of hours south of New Delhi, which is also a tomb and I hope to visit it the next time). Feel free to work on it.

It wasn't until after I edited this that I realized Floyd already posted a version with the background changed. Oh well, I did a better job.

so far thats the best version and thats the beauty of knowing how to edit. nice white snow, pretty skies with nice patterns , no wires, no distractons. excellent job. im not good yet removing the big stuff from the photo but im still practicing.

as far as my opinion this is why serious photographers eventually need to learn to edit. who cares if its accurate, it looks real purdy and i would prefer this anyday over anything resembling the origonal.

Actually it is fairly easy to mask and create two (or more) sets of pictures from one. Then replace/tweak the ones you want, separately, and combine them.

In my first version, I could have kept the house, and eliminated the wires using that effect (no need for healing). For that, I would have had the first layer (the snow foreground), the house as the second layer, and the wires as the third. Then, place another layer of something (say, a blue sky, or rather dark, which I considered but didn't have time for), and wipe the unwanted parts out. With these tools, blue sky is technically the limit and imagination is the vehicle.

i do the merging and swap outs all the time between images . its easy to merge and swap but to get really really good results takes alot more photoshop skill than i have right now. some of the skills i have seen used are amazing.

healing brush is okay for wires but big areas you need the clone tool i find..

i usually lay an origonal version and an hdr version together and then erase the parts i dont want the hdr. im actually pretty new to using photoshop.

i do 99% of all my work in nikon capture nx2.

I don't use PS so the terms may different but since what you would want to select highly contrasts with the snow the magic wand is you friend. The snow man picture would require more work but this is one click selection on the sky, invert it, cut and paste on anew canvas and add some shadow for depth.:

Note the dome on the left side has a little missing and there is probably some other errors here but I left them on purpose. The point is the magic wand has done most of the work. By adjusting the similarity or hand editing the selection after the grunt work has been by the magic wand you can speed things up a lot.

Of course my post above applies only to removing whole parts of an image, the clone tool works best for removing things like wires if you want the sky to look right. It would be obvious choice for the people in that image. I once cloned a whole arm onto someone in a really old family photo that was damaged.
