I wonder if Upton knows how close that 41% is to the number of people who think Obama is doing a good job these days. Too many polls have him under 50 and very close to that 41 to get really excited about one and try so hard to ignore the other.
It shows that intellect and belief in religion are directly correlated. The more you learn and the more you know, the less likely you are to believe in the moronic beliefs of Christianity (or any other religion). Seriously, 59% of people without college believe Jesus is coming back in less than 40 years while only 19% of college graduates (some are probably from Bob Jones, Liberty, Point Loma Nazarene or an equivalent "college") believe, that's a huge difference.
That also means that most people without college degrees believe the apocalypse is coming soon...scary stuff. This is why all that money we spend on military to have all those enlisted boys at our disposal should actually be spent on getting those same boys a real education so we can move past these primitive notions of religion like most of the rest of the Western world.
You need to review the actual research numbers and not that linked story.
you have your figures wrong.
the 59% and the 19% figures are related to the total number of respondents to the poll. Not the correlated numbers of the general population.
We don’t have exact numbers from the linked story about belief and general population.
I do however agree that there is a correlation to be made between education and non-belief. However, I suspect the reason for it is a bit more complicated than simply the idea that education erodes faith.
Roy, it is really not unusual that this would be the view of the "wise"
dont forget the bible actually deals with this. Gods wisdom confounds the wise. The wise are foolish to God. Its biblical.
AYI asked my minister about what would happen to atheists and others who make fun of Christians and she simply said "God will take care of them" to which I had to ask if he would forgive them on THE DAY and she just said that "He will take care of them" in a tone that told me that she didn't believe they would be forgiven without requesting forgiveness.
Now that minister is only 64 years old and may not be as highly educated as many here but she does believe what she said. I guess the amount of wisdom she has gained over the years would have to be questioned since she is a Christian. Is that right?
There's only one, yes one, unforgiveable sin. A roster of good deeds gets you nowhere (but hell) if you don't accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.
One of your very best posts, this one is. Just what my minister told me the other day when I asked what she thought about the problems that unbelievers may have on their judgement day.
It’s no surprise that the less educated believe, but education is no barrier to believing in fairy tales and superstitions. Peer groups (geogpraphic, political) may play a significant role in beliefs.
There is no war against christians in America. Stop playing victim. Christians in America are from being an oppressed minority.
How about an oppressed majority? That is what I see.

"Wisdom" based on accepting beliefs without question has little value.
Wisdom comes from the thought process, analytical and abstract thinking. And certainly not to reject reason and logic.

Sure, when reason and logic falls short, non-believers can always be threatened with eternal damnation.

Roy, I am foolish enough to believe that God will take care of us all.... what that entails is (IMHO) very individual.
Man can take care of a baby or he can take care of the trash.... those two things fix what is wrong but the method is very very different....
It sounds to me that your minister is a lady wise in the ways of God...
