When did the Taliban become an upright, law abiding political organization, in good standing.

Yeah..I heard that on the radio today and thought the same thing.
They are recognized now as some type of organized entity.

What's next..a seat at the UN ? Will they now qualify for foreign aid ?

Suffice it to say, "We don't negotiate with terrorist" was a hollow phrase if there ever was one, the Sunni insurgents being just one, but that isn't what I want to talk about. What I want to know is just what do you reactionaries want? Do you want to stay in Afghanistan or do you want to leave? The reason that I ask is if you are so damned fed up with the war, and you want to withdraw American forces, then I'm not feeling the outrage over negotiating how to do that.

If the Afghan government or Pakistan government want to talk to the Taliban then that's their business but the US government shouldn't be negotiating with them. That's my first thoughts. However, it's entirely possible that some Taliban factions are willing to work with the new afghan government and the Americans. We don't know the current social/political situations on the ground. If this is a negation under terroristic threats, then no talks. If it's political cooperation talks then "trust but verify".

We've been holding talks with various Taliban elements for years. Secretive (though not entirely secret) meetings were being held between US officials and Taliban spokesmen in the UAE way back in 2005/6. It hasn't succeeded so far, but, if we're going to withdraw from the area anyway, it's not like the various Taliban factions can be ignored when it comes to Afghanistan's future.

Or to put it another way... what's the alternative?

So what are we doing to do..talk to and pay off each faction to "leave us alone" ?

Not only do we not "Not negotiate with terrorists" we create, fund, and otherwise nurture them. Osama Bin Laden the most notorious and infamous terrorist the world has known was a product of the CIA. LMAO! America continues to be the land of hypocrites and irony.
