Btw, I'm in charge of ordering ALL of the teen books for our library, and I do include some titles that touch on adult subjects & homosexuality... but I'd say it's maybe 1-2% of the entire YA collection.
Would you also add 1-2% of arsenic to the water cooler?
I actually am familiar with "Tweak," although I haven't read it yet... but if I'm not mistaken, it's about a man's (autobiographical) journey in overcoming drug addiction, and doesn't focus on his sexual experiences. It's definitely more adult in content than some teen books, but again you can CHOOSE to restrict your child from reading it. I highly doubt it's required reading, and the kids probably had a bunch of others to choose from on their list. I did read a similar book called "Cut," and found it intriguing with an excellent overall message/moral - a bit melodramatic, but that's what teens generally like.
I read "Go Ask Alice" when I was a kid in the 70's. I survived.
And what about "Annie on My Mind?" I read that book in grad school (for my Young Adult resources class), and was actually disappointed at how tame it was. Caused such a stir back when it was written, I was expecting serious debauchery and graphic content... but much to my surprise, it was more tame than most of what Shakespeare wrote. I bet people in those days opposed his books too!
LOL @ you two... and you are so right! Murder and war are fine, but relations between two people of the same sex? Oh, the horror!!
P.S. Why hasn't anyone started a complaint thread about Romeo & Juliet? Those kids were like 14 years old, and already doing the nasty!
Because the anti-gay posters on this thread probably think that a 'shakespeare' is something you use to stab and eat chicken.
