I'd be happy if people like Romney paid the same rate I pay (28%) instead of half

As discussed many times before, it is not how much WE pay, but how much THEY spend. The budget needs a very sharp pair of scissors, and a politician with the actual courage to use them.

Once again the wings each only see their own side.
Its both.
You wont get close to balanced without both unless you are willing to cut SS and Medicare hardcore.
Go back to 2000 tax levels. Get rid of the carried interest loophole for hedgefund managers. If it is not YOUR money in the game it is not YOUR carried interest.
AND
go here for LOTS of good ideas. I dont agree with all but there is some very very good ideas contained.

I pay way more than my fair share. When the bottom 50% start actually having to pay taxes, I'll consider listening to this ridiculous argument.

Half the country pays no taxes? I don't believe that.

No, this is a massive oversimplification.

What do they spend? They spend money on social security and medicare, sure. But 70% of Americans support that spending, and in fact are in favor of tax increases to keep them solvent in poll after poll. Of course they want cuts in spending first.

Where do a majority of Americans think that most of the cuts needed should come from?

(Reuters) - A majority of Americans prefer cutting defense spending to reduce the federal deficit rather than taking money from public retirement and health programs, a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Wednesday showed.

The poll found 51 percent of Americans support reducing defense spending, and only 28 percent want to cut Medicare and Medicaid health programs for the elderly and poor. A mere 18 percent back cuts in the Social Security retirement program.
