However, in the latest study the authors claim the phenomenon is not only widespread but part of a necessary biological adaptation for the survival of the species.

Any other factually incorrect statements you would like to make in this thread?

There is nothing wrong with human beings or animals of the same sex - being a couple..it's cute - There is a difference between animals and humans in this respect- a male dog may mount another male dog - as if it is a sexual act--It is not sexual- It's an action of domination....NEVER would a male dog insert it's penis into the anal opening of another male- They just don't- Humans with their vivid imaginations and wild curiosity do...........

To say a couple of female birds that couple are "lesbians" is utterly stupid and wishful thinking on the part of some humans...friendship and love are one thing- sex and reproduction are another matter.

Why is it always you anti-gays who bring anal sex into every gay discussion? You people are seriously obsessed with it.

Can you tell me why opposite sex animals who show none-reproductive sexual behavior are labeled heterosexual, but same sex animals who do are said to be practicing dominance?

This is not the first time you've described that particular act so graphically. Any reason why you find them so, uh, interesting?

Aren't you the guy who recently posted that sex acts should be kept private?

I agree that it doesn't make sense to talk about "gay" animals in the same way we talk about gay people - animals clearly don't conceptualize sexuality. However, that doesn't change the fact that what you could describe as homosexual behavior and even homosexual coupling is found throughout the animal kingdom.

It's especially prevalent in birds. Take black swans for instance. 25% of male black swans couple in male-male pairings. These are lifelong, "monogamous" parings - these males never mate with females, and they mimic mating with each other. These "gay" couples raise chicks. They either take in orphaned chicks or steal eggs from male-female nests. And they make great parents - chicks raised by male-male black swan couples are twice as likely to survive than chicks raised by male-female black swan couples.

What are you thoughts on that?

China

From that same link, a look at what is happening globally:

"Today’s most important population trend is falling birthrates. The world’s total fertility rate -- the number of children the average woman will bear over her lifetime -- has dropped to 2.6 today from 4.9 in 1960. Half of the people in the world live in countries where the fertility rate is below what demographers reckon is the replacement level of 2.1, and are thus in shrinking societies."

Overpopulation is not a real problem. Managing societal decline due to population losses in most developed countries will be a major problem in the coming decades. There are too few younger workers to support the bigger, aging generations that preceded them.
Birth rates may be falling in some places, but overall the worlds population is still growing...Almost 30 million more people on the planet so far this year....
