the lunch that a soldier purchased at Baltimore airport last week. There were about 15-20 people inline ahead of me at Subway at BWI. When I got online, this young soldier was number four inline. Not one person acknowledged him, thanked him, or even offered to buy him lunch. As he was reaching into his pocket to pay I walked over to the register and said "Thanks man, this ones on me". These kids are leaving home for months at a time, many may not even come home. Take care of those that take care of us. Please acknowledge the men and women who serve America. If you can't afford to treat them to a lunch, a simple smile or thank you will make them feel good.
I'm sorry, he applied for a job.
He chose his career/job.
No one forced him to do anything.
Why is he special? He's not.
He's doing nothing for the US and not protecting any of my freedoms.
If anything, he's making my life less safe.
That's not the point
The point is that this young man is taking 4 years+ out of his life to serve his nation, he could die or come home without an arm or a leg ... and not many people acknowledge their sacrifices.

You think people are self centered because they don't buy lunch for someone they don't know? Yes, I appreciate what our military does, but it doesn't mean I have to personally thank ever soldier I cross paths with or buy them things. There is a very good reason we pay them for what they do and offer them benefits for enlisting. Our tax dollars pay for it.
A doctor saved my sons life. I think about it often and I did thank him after the operation. It's his job. Doctors save lives every day. I don't go into hospitals and thank all the doctors for being doctors and buy them things.
I also know some firemen and cops that have been in situations I never will be in. I treat them like normal people instead of gods. Again they are doing their job.
Really if you want to buy a soldier lunch it's fine and up to you. You are taking things too far by criticizing other people for not wanting to do that same.
Beat me to it. I was in the Marine Corps and traveled all around the world. I don't recall a stranger ever buying me a free lunch with the exception of the govt. If some strange dude in the airport had offered to buy me a free meal, I would have questioned his motives.

Are you sure you didn't do it to make yourself feel good?
Patting yourself on the back for a good deed?? I was always taught that when you do something nice for someone, you shouldn't expect anything in return, not even praise or acknowledgement. A true selfless act requiers no reciprocity.
If it makes you feel better, god bless America and god bless you
Correction: Not "serving his nation",but rather "serving the federal government"
See the difference?
Anyway he gets paid from my tax dollars for his efforts, and if any soldier doesn't like the gig, look for another.
FWIW pizza deliver guys put themselves in harms way all the time for a far more useful cause, shall we start flagging down Domino's drivers to thank them?

How do I not know that he's been sent home to stand trial for desertion or cowardice? How do you know? You could have bought lunch for a deserter. How do you feel now? And you call yourself a patriot???
Isn't BWI where all soldiers come in from overseas? You know, even soldiers stationed in Germany come in there?
