I served during the 80's and experienced the disrespect firsthand. Having said that, I would have probably felt a little uncomfortable if anyone had ever thanked me for my service, only because I've always been a humble person. But every once in awhile it would have been nice to hear it. Some of the comments people have made to me during my service and later in life after someone found out I had served, have been unreal.

Odd to read the rude comments in this thread, especially being the 4th of July. Some of you need to get grounded in reality. You can disagree whether we should have gone into Iraq, but that doesn't change the fact a lot of people were serving the nation (which included every single one of you) when they were killed. They aren't the ones that made the big decisions. Many of them joined up after 9/11 willing to fight the terrorists. You know, the ones who attacked us on 9/11. Google it, if you aren't aware what happened that day in 2001.

Then google 'Faces of Valor' and look at all the faces of those who died serving the country and fought the enemy over there so people like you wouldn't get blown up over here.
I served in the 80's as well and I don't recall ever having heard a rude word towards me regarding my service. Of course, I was in the Marine Corps and we did not wear cammies off the base, so most people would not know we were in the service.

How do they take care of us? By fighting in countries that we have no business being in except to protect petrol/military interests? Military already receive many discounts on airlines, food, subsidized housing for families, free college education, healthcare for life for he and his family if they stay for 20 years or more, etc. Many of us are just getting by, taxed to death by the government, battling inflation in just about everything, etc. Sorry Gomer Pyle, you can pay your own way like everyone else.

Nice sentiment, but we didn't go into Iraq to "fight terrorists", as Saddam Hussein posed no threat, didn't tolerate radical fundamentalism, and while a despicable man, we had no right to depose him and tear his country to pieces. Bush and Cheney were despicable and killed more people than Hussein did, but we would not have welcomed a foreign country removing them.

The only reason we invaded was because they have the worlds 2nd largest oil reserves. Those who ordered the invasion are nothing better than war criminals, yet remain free and even have the adulation of their ideologically trained supporters.

Many Americans are just too smart to believe any more patriotic nonsense coming from the U.S. govt., but we still respect our military. The hero worship orchestrated by the govt. on behalf of the military is meant to make dissent and outrage over invading and occupying innocent nations into an attack on those who risk their lives in those countries for all the wrong reasons. It is meant to stifle dissent.

You people opposed to welfare have a real blind spot when it comes to the military.
How many vets do we feed, clothe and house, how many broken vets are we paying to take care of and how many have we had to bury?
Someone tell me the benefit to all this money spent, resources destroyed and lives ruined?
Isn't it nice to spew your hateful ignorance without getting arrested, thrown in a dungeon, and possibly executed? You can thank our veterans who protected your freedom to do so. You're speaking english instead if german or russian thanks to them. And thanks to our men and women in uniform the terrorists have been fighting in foreign countries rather than coming here to your hometown.

And this is the way you repay them? Google 'Faces of Valor'. You more than anyone here needs to stare into the faces in the photos of those who gave their lives for you and your family and friends.

I teach at a school with mandatory JROTC. Because of an issue with our unit status, my students wear actual (non JROTC) navy uniforms. Dunkin donuts, random strangers always assume they are actual active duty service (even with the JROTC bar they wear) and offer to cover their coffee or say "thanks you" to them. We have had multiple discussions with them where we have to remind them it is unethical to accept anything based on people's misperceptions.

You ungrateful idiots wouldn't be sitting in your air conditioned homes playing xbox eating cheetos if it wasn't for them. You'd be forced to go out and fight for your freedoms around the world if nobody volunteered to be in the military. There should be a liberal registry to know who are real enemies at home are. They are no different than the violent terrorists attacking democracy around the world except liberals attack democracy at home and bring it more inline to their communist ideology. You queers should also be especially grateful since these soldiers have no choice but to defend your freedom to live perverted lifestyles other countries execute people for. We have to stop this atheistic liberal plague that is destroying our nation.

You may not have experienced the disrespect, but I did time and time again. Sometimes from my countrymen, and sometimes by people I crossed paths with while serving overseas. I'm not going to explain each incident to you. Really don't care if you believe me.

Having reading comprehension problems? I didn't say we went into Iraq to fight terrorists, that would be Afghanistan. I disagreed with going into Iraq, but that's a different issue entirely from the discussion. This is about the extreme amount of disrespect some here obviously have for our military.

Whether or not people respect the military is irrelevant. No one has to go around buying people lunches. If they want to, great, but it's no one's obligation.
