You're right. I had forgotten about that when I wrote that post.
Nevertheless, this shooting is not a reason for more gun control. Perhaps if other people had had guns in this incident, it wouldn't have made much of a difference, but in many cases it would (and does) save lives.
If it were not then maybe someone else would have shown up with their own gun and killed the bad guy.
Do the math... CO has about 2.7% of age eligible populace holding a CC permit. While there is no definitive information on how many permit holders actually carry with any regularity, let's assume the 1 in 10 number that has been thrown out here and there.
Theater size, say 400 seats? Number of under permit age patrons in the theater, 200? So we have 200 adults (though how adult they are to be at that movie at that time may be questionable). That would mean possibly 5 or 6 permit holders. Using the 1 in 10 permit holders carry assumption, there's little likelihood there was a legally carried gun in the theater, without even getting into the issue of the theater being posted.
Consider also that the Venn diagram showing Colorado CCW permit holders and those who would likely attend a midnight movie premier have very little overlap.
Gun control is not going to prevent criminals from getting guns. It only results in law-abiding people not having guns. If someone in the theater other than this maniac had had a gun, they might have been able to stop him. A law saying that people cannot have guns will obviously not keep a maniac who couldn't care less about the law from getting/having a gun.
There need to be stiff penalties for anyone who supplies guns to those who have been convicted of felonies, to known gang members, and to those who have severe mental illnesses.

Maybe more people should get CC permits and carry guns or perhaps requirements to get permits to carry guns should be eliminated. I think that anyone over 18 or 21 who has never been convicted of a felony, who is not a gang member, and who has not been diagnosed with a severe mental illness should be able to carry a gun and there should be no permit required.
