Don't ask us, ask all the employers who require college degrees.

Everyone is entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Nobody is entitled to "free" health care or college education.

Default Why should all young people be entitled to a college education?

The value of the four-year college degree has gone from nearly guaranteeing prosperity 15 years ago to what the high school diploma once was. It college becomes an entitlement, it will even further devalue it. So why is it so necessary that more people go to college?

Something that puts the bearer $50,000 to $100,000 in debt doesn't sound at all "entitle-ish" to me.

Probably just me, though.

Default real simple

More and more people going to college funded by more and more tax dollars equals job security for the ed-yew-cay-tohrs.

It would be in the best interest of the boomers for the generation who will be supporting their social security to be educated thus more competitive globally. This way high paying jobs will remain in the u.s. and the tax base will be there to support social security. Providing every american with the opportunity to get a free college education is in the best interest of those who plan on collecting social security.

It is about staying competitive in a global economy. Of course people will still choose to not go to school and work for less money. But if you think foreigners are not getting degree's in engineering, Cpu science and Medicine then you are not paying attention. Why not incentivize American youth to pursue those professions?

And I know I am the most hated poster on this forum. I know my opinion really isn't worth a damn, but I don't see what is so politically incorrect about this specific question to warrant the personal attacks.
Good post. Too many kids get sold on gaining a degree. Some would be much better off entering the workforce at 18 and gaining 4 yrs seniority with their employer vs. going to college. Or maybe pulling a short enlistment in the military to decide what direction they want to go.
And, bchris02, don't sell yourself short. You're very educated in your ideas, even if you bug the crap out of me sometimes. Your posts make me try to look at the other point of view, which is what this forum is supposed to be about.
Keep 'em coming.

There are many jobs that don't require degrees. I work with many that offer so much in that they are carpenters, or sheet rockers ,plumbers and electricians. They add essential pieces to a complicated life and I'm good with them learning a trade vs college.

They shouldn't be, but wait for the barrage of Liberal bull-****.

Let's see.....

America: Education is "expensive" yet 1 in 4 working Americans has a college degree

Europe: Education is "free" yet only 1 in 25 Brits has a degree; 1 in 25 Germans has a degree; 1 in 33 Spaniards has a degree; and 1 in 33 French have a degree.

What is wrong with that picture?

Liberals always omit major details......yes, education is free....but only the creamiest of the creamy of the cream of the crop get to go to college.

No doubt. I had a quite a few students who should have been escorted off campus and shot for being stupid in a No-Stupid Zone.

Educationally...
