As I recall, the pilgrims were not on welfare. What we DO NOT NEED is a lot more people on welfare. If they are not productive and do not bring a valuable skill- keep them out.
So MTA- do YOU want to pay for all the welfare that these "immigrants" collect, or, like a typical lib, do you want other people to pay for them? Why do libs like immigrants? More immigrants= more on welfare= more democratic voters.
We should have agreements with nations like Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK that allow a fast track process to get the right to work in the United States. At least with Canada and the UK who are our closest allies...we should provide preferencial treatment to our Western allies. Period. This should also apply both ways for Americans who would like to leave the country to go to Canada and the UK.
Other nations we should continue to encourage immigration but with a preference to skilled and highly educated labor.

Are you KIDDING ME? The pilgrims wouldn't have survived without welfare from the First Nations People (FNP). The pilgrims didn't bring with them farming or construction implements. FNPs had these which they had made themselves. Pilgrims didn't clear land, they merely took the land that had been cleared by the FNP who lived there already. Pilgrims didn't know how to fish, didn't know how to make houses, didn't know how to obtain water, how to plant, how to do anything and had to be taught all this by the FNP. They were on welfare, totally and fully. Often, they stole from the FNPs, going into their communities and stealing jars, and all kinds of trinkets they had, AND FOOD. For Pete's sake, Plymouth Rock was an FNP village! They were squatters and welfare recipients. In exchange what they gave the FNP was disease - diseases of all kinds that they arrived from their lands with.
So please, before you go spewing about how the pilgrims were self-sufficient (they were not!), get yourself a few history books and read up on your country.

Intelligent people know that the extremists on either side don't represent the majority on either side. Only those with an agenda will hold up the extremists as representing the side they don't agree with.
