Players routinely do community events, charities, and other functions representing their team. At these events they bring their significant other. He is a free agent. My guess is he wanted to prepare potential teams that he's going to live openly gay so if you don't want a guy on your team bringing his same sex partner to visit sick kids in the hospital...don't call him.

I agree with this, why tell everyone? Most heterosexuals don't broadcast their sexual preference around the world, why should gays?
Except when they discuss their spouse or girlfriend, or are on page 5 in a paparazzi pic, or take their spouse or girlfriend to team events, or mention their weekend plans with their spouse. Or have their wedding in every newspaper and magazine.

Maybe we should concentrate on punishing the aggressor and not the victim.
