It seems only one "kid", 18 year-old Kenji Mikesell, wore a BSA uniform to the parade. And for all I know he did seek the advice of his father.
Also, I don't, and never have met another Scout, who views the BSA as paramilitary.
We shot rifles and had to qualify for marksmen badges. We learned water rescue and survival skills. We hiked, camped and learned the ways of Native Americans (that's Indians for you city dwellers). Qualified for a Totin' Chip with knives, axes, saws and other edged tools and carried and used them. Could start a fire in many different ways.....WITHOUT matches. Your uniform was always pressed and wrinkle free....starch like. Belt buckles were mirror shiny brass that you had to polish as well as your boots. You could drive a canoe before you were 12 and not tip it or lose the cargo. If you were hungry, you had a fishing pole with you to catch something to eat.

Yeah - I get it. I too did many of those things. I think we're just having a semantics debate. What you've written does not fall under the heading "paramilitary."
