By personally inserting himself into the topic he completely alienated the people who have the power to stop doing the very things he and other AAs are complaining about.
So, he gave blacks a thumbs up and made them feel good in the short term but in effect he was kicking them in the rear by making their future progress more difficult. That is the problem with his approach.
That is the problem with his leadership or lack thereof for the country as a whole. For all his hopes and promises he has proven to be just as divisive and hapless as his much maligned predecessor.

race is a non issue to the youth, just look outside. i see mixed couples everyday in a heavy white state among the youth.
the elderly whites in particular are the problem and time will get rid of them.
