Unfortunately I have had a lot of health issues over the past 20 years or so. I had major surgeries on both my knees, one complete wrist reconstruction, 5 major shoulder surgeries including a complete rebuild of my left shoulder involving bone grafts, tendon and ligament grafts. In addition to that I have had two cochlear implants. The amount of aftercare visits to the hospital, physio and Dr's clinics are uncountable.

I have never had to pay one red cent for any of this. Thank the Lord I'm a Canadian and my country supplies universal healthcare to everyone. Does it not just drive you Americans nuts that we manage to do this and spend only about 50% per capita on healthcare that your government spends?

You're preaching to the choir as far as I'm concerned. I've been in favor of single-payer healthcare in this country since I was old enough to know what it was.

Australia's big health care controversy at the moment is whether we should charge a $5 fee for emergency room and GP visits.

The fact that you dont have to worry about it is meaningless. If one lived in a communist country, they wouldnt need to worry about housing costs, but that doesnt mean we should all celebrate such a system..
Unless you are the unlucky bastard who works for Walmart or fast food wages.

Why throw the extreme of communism out of left field to discredit systems around that work?

What system causes more cause for celebration? Is it the one where prices are inflated to ridiculous proportions and private health insurers and hospitals have patients over the barrel, to the point where people in their early 20s are footing five digit bills (even WITH insurance), forced into bankruptcy, or even dying due to lack of coverage/treatment..... or one where that isn't happening because everyone's taxes are a few hundred bucks extra per year (A massive net saving over what private cover would cost) AND they still have the option to take our private cover, anyway?

If the latter is a bad thing then call me Vladimir Ilyich Lenin.

Then again, perhaps this isn't something that can be likened to "communism" and is more in line with the way, in most sane countries (including, miraculously, the USA) the taxpayer funds the armed forces. The way the police and fire department don't lay a $10000 bill on you for coming around to save you from home invaders/stop your house from burning down. The way you don't need to pay a $10000 per year subscription to drive on roads and use other public infrastructure. The way children have access to education up till year 12 without forking out tens of thousands for the benefit.

That which you liken to communism is one of the fundamental precepts of Western, civilized society.

I make around $9 an hr or 16,000 a year with no employer health insurance. Any chance I'd get something major (like cancer) I'd probably have to put the lights out since there would be no way I could pay the 100's of thousands of dollars required to treat long term illnesses.

This is a survival of the fittest country, and perhaps that's how it's meant to be.

You "Canucks" are "Socialists" and "humane"! Some how "Canada" isn't bankrupt with your "medical" issues" huh?
Mean while we "Americans" have to fund "for profit" Insurance companies and then deny you "coverage" for certain health issues".
No wonder they are freaking out over "Obama Care"!

We Canadians are paying high taxes to cover the cost of our healthcare so its not actually free but you are covered for most aspects of your healthcare as your case points out. I wonder how your case would have played out under the USA system of healthcare..
