As the article says, they sit and reminisce about the old country. For HOURS. I'm suspicious that this situation might also have something to do with the fact that this McDonald's is heated, and perhaps their homes are not.
As others have noted - there are other places for them to gather. They often go to eat at one of the other Senior Centers and then go to the McDonalds. There is something specific to that location that draws them. It could be habit - a well known gathering place. It could be the Sunshine that comes through all those windows. It could be the variety of people and activity at a McDonalds - perhaps they enjoy being a part of vibrancy and not shuffled away in a room on 'old people'.
Whatever it is that draws them - the poster who noted they have ZERO concern for the others that come to the McDonalds is very valid. These people are RUDE and obstinate about their Rudeness.
Any business has a right to remove those that hamper their business. A sandwich shop in Chicago recently 'shut down' for a 'remodel' because of Union activists blocking their business-- this may be the only way to solve the issue. Mickey D should consider just closing for a period of time to get these peoe to leave. Anything short of that is going to bring the Anti-Business new Mayor of New York City down on their backs.

You're right -- they are incredibly rude, especially given the fact that they aren't eating meals.
Maybe the McDonald's should hire a Kim Jung Un-lookalike to sit and stare at them.
This has nothing to do with age discrimination, and everything to do with rude people taking up space that other customers could be taking.
I agree. There is a similar thread in the Retirement forum and hardly anyone thinks they should be taking up space in McDonald's all day. The police have to come and shoo them away, but they just laugh it off and come right back. McDonald's would be the LAST place I'd want to hang out in but I do sympathize with them for losing business due to these inconsiderate, disrespectful people. If a bunch of teenagers did that they'd probably get charged with loitering.

Why is it hard? Why does someone else have to be responsible to come invite them someplace else for them to stop being rude?

Why would a NYPD Officer cite a statue?
What could a statue do to justify writing a citation?
Since it is in a McDonalds, it must be a statue of Ronald, or maybe the Hamburgler.
I think the hours are a bit exaggerated, but they DO have a tendency to sit in McDonald's for hours on end. 3 or 4 hours for sure. They do it all the time at this local store.
That said, what are you gonna do? Not much that you can do.
