This McDonalds has a 20 minute sign. Apparently this group of seniors ignore it. Eventually the police are called. The seniors walk around the block and return.

Maybe the drama gives this group a sence of purpose.

The majority of the world's billionaires are US people and seniors which skews the numbers. Pew Research says the wealth of a senior household is $170,500, including perceived home equity. This estimate is based on an experimental Census abstract that included the value of non cash government assistance like SNAP and Section 8.

The typical Social Security monthly check is $1,100, after Medicare deductions.

That may be true, but us older folks are in our highest earning years. We have climbed the corporate ladder and now earn more than non-seniors. By the time you are qualify for a senior discount, you are use your age to get a discount that your bank account does not need.

A senior discount is marketing 101. As the baby boom ages I suspect many of these discounts will disappear.

The more meaningful discounts are trending towards means testing, as they should.

It is kind of weird to court seniors by offering a discount and at the same time criticizing "senior behavior" like what is happening at McDonalds around the country with these "squatters".

If you have an upscale resturant and don't want parents to bring their children, you don't offer a children's menu or smaller portions/cost for kids.

So people need to show up at Denny's with a copy of their 1040 now ?
That is the trend you speak of ?

I can see both sides.......but maybe those elderly people are just lonely and want to be among people instead of home alone. I guess McDonalds can post No Loitering signs, but I think they should take the high road and leave those old folks in peace. After all, they make billions of dollars a day! The people that come in and cant sit because of some old folks can eat in the car or outside on the picnic tables or go to a park or take it home, etc. Its not the end of the world. But those old folks don't have much time left. Let them enjoy what is left.

There is a senior center around the corner.
They leave McD's and go there for the free lunch every day and then come back to McD's.

The NYT article has a picture of the restaurant.
It's a very small restaurant, typical of the FF places built in urban cities.
This is not a sprawling stand alone McD's like you see in suburbia or off the highways.

True indeed. A photo I saw elsewhere showed very limited seating.

I feel for the owner/manager of this McDonalds. Not only are these squatters keeping away paying customers, it is reasonable to assume that they use the restrooms on site, using up toilet paper, water, soap and paper towels, and probably complaining if the restroom is not cleaned to their satisfaction.

McDonalds has a heater, where those on fixed incomes can't afford the heating bill.
