No, but we can use public money to help the public, instead of hoping employers eventually do it.

What does this have to do with the topic? Minimum wage increase has nothing to do with public money.

You mentioned losing jobs to automation, not me.

And as a result of that, it's important we have a social structure whose foundation is NOT the employer.

I predict DeBlasio will act soon in NYC. He's a progressive.
He's already asked Albany for permission for the city to set it's own min wage.
The state turned down his request but he said he'll keep trying.
NY set their new min wage at $8/hour for next year. DeBlasio wants more.

Companies in Europe and Asia have jumped on the automation bandwagon.
Look no further than Europe to see what will happen here.

We're not the leaders here by any means.

And the Facebook generation prefers digital media over human interaction.

$8 in NYC is a joke, and an insult to the working poor.

How can we expect people to lift themselves out of poverty when they can sell a bag of heroin and make more in one day than they would in a month at Walgreens?

The NYC metro should have a much higher minimum wage because the cost of living justifies it.

In NY it is the state that sets the min wage and it is statewide.
That is why DeBlasio wants to be able to set his own min wage for NYC.

People will not lift themselves out of poverty working min wage regardless of what you peg it at.

Even the FedGov has a hard time defining "poverty".

For a single person the Fed defines from FPL to 400% of FPL ($11.6 to $46.6)
I don't think there's any program that starts at FPL..I think they all start at 133% of FPL now.

By taking responsibility for themselves and acquiring skills that will pay them a wage that will lift them out of poverty. I know personal responsibility isn't necessarily a theme of the left, but we can all agree that this is ideal.

I'm just curious...

....would you prefer a future with 5% unemployment or 35% unemployment, with those 30% of jobs going towards automation?

35% unemployment is going to be a lot of people on welfare...
