If we're looking for behavioral clues indicating who should "be allowed" to have guns and who shouldn't... perhaps this behavior should rank near the top of the list?
Because that is given out to a lot of people on a wellness check.
Someone calls 911 and says Bob sure seems depressed lately can you have the police check to make sure he is ok, police to to bob's house and knock on door. Bob answers and talks to police. Police ask if he is ok, bob says he is, just working through some things in his life, maybe is dog died or something, police say ok and hand him a couple of pamphlets with information about how to get help and leave.
Well you need evidence of a criminal act or plot to get a warrant.
Of course all they had to do, if they had gotten a bad vibe from him, was say they caught the smell of marijuana in the house, and there was a warrant.
The point is, its hard to find mental illness, because not everyone who is mentally ill is a threat.
Unless, of course, in all the chaos, someone mistook the gun-yielding victim for the culprit.

Or maybe lightning hits the person with the gun who is trying to stop the person with the knife, probably best we don't let anyone have a gun because they might get struck by lightening and all.

So you want police to lie and illegally search people's premises? Really?
The simple fact is besides very rare cases we cannot predict what someone will do in the future. From this you either believe that people should be free and deal with cases where someone snaps or people should not and everyone who looks funny should be locked up and medicated against their will just in case.
