It may sound far fetched, but someone or something very sinister could be behind the militarization of police in the U.S. Within 20 years, Police Departments have gone from carrying sidearms to a tactical military force, with the potential to possibly rival the the U.S. Military. All justified or approved by someone in the name of for fighting crooks, robbers and drug dealers.
The militarization of Police Departments is bad business and could potentially be a threat to a government. If this militarization continues, rest assured, police forces will be pushing for and SOMEONE will authorize them to have tanks and more advanced weaponry.
And for those of you that believe that this far fetched...remember the American Civil War.
The criminals got harder and more equipped. Though some might still like to view law enforcement as Barney Fife, Rosco P. Coltrane, Enos and Cletus, the reality is they were morons and very unprofessional. They also couldn't fight their way out of a wet paper bag. I'm all for it and the more professional and highly trained the better.

when dealing with the animals in society of today, (gangs carrying UZI's, bank robbers having flak jackets and ak47's..etc) we NEED the cops to be more armed than the thug criminals
uhm the mine resistant trucks ...or.. MRAPS
PROTECT the occupants from IED's...like the pressurecooker mines the boston bombers used
mines are not just anitvehicular, but also anti-personnel ...like the claymore mine....quit thinking mines are only land mines in war like on tv
an IED is a mine
uhm the 40mm M203 grenade launcher has been used for decades...99% of all teargas (CS Gas) is launched from it...also used for flares, and colored concealment smoke grenades too
when the gangs are running around with flack jackets and uzis, yes you want you cops to be armed to handle that
Very simple solution to this problem and we can kill two birds with one stone. Anything the police are allowed to utilize the public should be able to utilize.
Originally 50 of the finest, bravest and most honest men he could fine......was reduced down to 15 then only 9 of the best of the best wore the name "The Untouchables"......circa 1920s Chicago IL.
That post in not far-fetched at all. I agree. I didn't realize it started that long ago, but it did. I noticed when the Patriotic Act was pushed into law to deal with Muslim terrorists. Only to realize that few Muslims were ever apprehended, that it was being used to monitor and arrest Americans with warrantless searches, wiretaps, delayed warrants gave police the right to enter a home or dwelling when the occupant was not at home, search their property and tell them later, and other "police rights". Yes, police ran with that authority until they now shoot citizens at will. They do that because they can stop and search people if they "think" the person(s) are commiting a crime, after stopping those in question police can claim "fear for their life" to decide their actions. police were supposed to "Protect and Serve" but we watch tv for that.
I have also read similar scenarios like the one you posted.

In a WACO situation, I fully agree. Not on the streets of cities, though.
Are you old enough to remember that shootout in LA? The cops literally had to go to a nearby gun store to get fire power. These guys had full padded body armor and automatic AK-47's.
