But.... but... but .... I thought if we outlawed the Confederate battle flag that would stop idiots from mass killings..... just like outlawing drugs has stopped drug abuse.
The issue is with your "thinking". This is about government speech, not about flag waving idiotic individuals and groups intent on committing crimes.
I can understand people being uncomfortable living in a state flying a Confederate flag. It really isn't that hard to understand.
I know someone is going to think this as sarcasm but it isn't. Do we need to change the name of the Robert Byrd Highway here in WV?
While I never miss an opportunity to bring up Byrd's racist/KKK past, I think the highway name is fine as he rehabilitated/reformed his way of thinking. Can't say the same for various confederate generals, etc.
I listened to the Progressive Talk Channel today on Sirius. I thought the Urban Channel was bad... but these people are insane and consumed by arrogance, ignorance and hate. They kept railing against the south, against conservatives, against middle America, saying people who watch Fox News need to be deprogrammed of racism. No wonder Air America folded if that was the kind of garbage they spewed. They made callers of Rush and Hannity look positively enlightened and completely open minded by comparison. Seriously, the worst right wing caller never approached the intolerance and bigotry of those leftist callers.

Playing devils advocate a little as I'm trying to think this all through. It seems to me that Robert E Lee did what he did not in the name of slavery. I can't say the same for others so I guess I start there.
One can argue that the institution would have continued for awhile if he had won, so there is that but can we judge people based upon our perceptions today? Will future generations demand references to Bush and Obama be removed for their role in the killing of many thousands needlessly?
This is the thing. I get sick of hearing about "mental illness" with mass shooters. Do you know for a fact that he was mentally ill?
He stated that he went in that church to kill Black people. He admitted his hatred for Blacks. He said he wanted to start a race war. Open and shut case.
This. There are millions of people with mental illness and they aren't racist mass murderers.
Racism is not a mental illness. Having a mental illness is not an excuse to be a racist or a bigot. Hatred is learned, it's a choice. He committed this crime because he's an evil racist. Not because he had a mental illness or was on drugs.
Also, there is plenty that can be done for those that are actually mentally ill.

How about Washington and Jefferson? Should we burn their memorials?
