If the Confederate States of America was one big white supremacist group, maybe someone should have mentioned that to the black confederate soldiers who fought for the south. Maybe someone should have also mentioned to those black masters that it wasn't very politically correct to own slaves. And maybe those northern territories, such as Boston and New York, should have been wiser not to have bought and sold slaves in the back of coffee houses and bars.
Anyone who says that is either ignorant of what they speak, or they are a racist liar and a bigot towards Southern White people. Probably the latter. Case closed.

Yes, the north participated in and was complicit in slavery for a very long time. And yes, some blacks owned slaves.
However, all that wiggling and squirming doesn't change the reality that the Confederate flag has clearly become a symbol of white supremacy and racial hatred.

One shouldn't condemn something because it was used by people for evil. It seems to me that the problem is what it originally represented.
The KKK also used white sheets but yet no one is asking for them to be banned.
Nobody is arguing that the Confederate flag caused this. Most people with some sense would realize it wasn't the cause. This is about the fact that alot of people who are bigots fly that flag. It did not cause the shooting, and no one is saying that it did. What people are saying is that throughout history, bigots have used the Confederate flag.
And the Black on Black violence that takes place in the inner cities have nothing to do with the shooting in Charleston, so the two can't be compared.
Nobody is talking about banning the Confederate flag -- just whether it should be flown at state capitols and public buildings.
I was discussing the reasons for that. It shouldn't be because people have used it for no good. Lots of things could be guilty held to that standard.
