By 21 years of age, you know better than to steal things.
I understand the this young man only took a photo of the banner. NK considered it stealing of an image.

Isn't that statement so very North Korean of you.

Not sure where that info has come from, but since the beginning, and even by dudes own admission, he tried to physically take a banner, not a picture. He was trying to take a physical souvenir for a fellow church member back home.

Is there any humanitarian in you? Or do you just enjoy that a young man in college will be tortured for allegedly taking a photo of a poster? This young man was not given a fair trial. You side with the propaganda North Korea feeds you instead of our own.

Anything released by North Korea is propaganda and not to be believed. This young man was prepped about what to say while the North Korean cameras rolled.

I understand that. I just haven't read anywhere, or seen anything, that says he was just taking a picture.

Nope. He stole the banner off the wall.

Surveillance video from the hotel was released.

It's quite the American thing to do ..stealing stuff from hotels as souvenirs.

Do I think this poor kid deserves this sentence- ABSOLUTELY NOT!! It truly was a stupid prank type behavior that should have had some consequence to scare the kid but this is a seriously harsh sentence. If this kid has to fulfill this sentence then I suspect if he survives he forever will be changed and hopefully will have a future since he will speak fluent Korean and I'm sure in strong physical shape after 15 years of "hard" labor.

After I heard this story the first thing I thought was why in the hell would I want to go to any country that has such severely strained relations with the U.S...& what Christian church encourages stealing??
There is truth to that, and I think he got what he deserved. However, we are one of the few countries you can enter illegally, commit crimes, denounce the country and it's laws, and still get handed free medical, welfare and housing, a driver's license and an education. Most countries are smarter than that. If this young man was from say California, you could see why he would expect to be rewarded for his crimes and disrespect. It's the way of life. You can understand how he would think that other countries treat foreign criminals with as much acceptance as we do.

Maybe he should demand a safe space and scream "f your borders" while flipping the nation the bird.

Oh, wait...NKs leaders are nuts, but they aren't stupid.

Yes he did something incredibly stupid, disrespectful and idiotic. And he's suffering the very real consequences of such.

But to say he "deserved it" is to excuse totalitarian oppression and disregard for individual liberty that as a freedom loving Western nation you should despise with all your being.

In a freedom loving country, people make mistakes and are punished accordingly, but relative to their transgression. The glee here over this young man's unimaginably heinous fate is appalling to me. I get the idea that plenty here would be just dandy living in lockstep with each other, in a world where individuality is completely frowned upon and everyone acts the same, thinks the same, and complies.

Yes he was stupid and is paying the price. But nobody deserves what has happened to that young man. That's what makes us better, we understand that. Well, I thought we did.

I think you are missing a very big point: Those guarantees of due process, fair trial, no cruel and unusual punishment, etc, are all things in the U.S. If a NK student was caught stealing something in the U.S. we would extend those rights to that student, as they were in our house, and our rules.

What Otto did was just the opposite..he went into NK's house, broke their rules, and was punished in their system. Our system does not mean squat in NK. It is precisely that attitude that causes the people in many country's to have an unfavorable view of Americans.

Additionally you do your fellow citizens a great disservice, suggesting that they side with NK. One of the most basic principles of real Americans is "respect of the law". Not just our laws, but the laws of others. The 21 year old adult failed to do so, and is going to pay whatever price that system has for that transgression.

And of course the other side of the coin is that our system has "progressed" to the point there is no real "punishment" for crimes. The result is much needless pain, loss of life and property, and wasteful use of valuable court and law enforcement resources. Mr. Warmbier embarrassed the U.S. by his criminal behavior, and is now going to pay a price that should pretty well guarantee he won't be stealing in NK anytime in the near future, something our "progressive" system rarely, if ever accomplishes.
