This is not bad luck and it isn't a game of chance.. It was stupid... He went to a country notorious of jailing foreigners and hostile to the US. That is stupid any way you put it... He deserves no pity... He did it to impress a girl at his church...

The University of Virginia is a pretty competitive school regardless of major. This guy is obviously lacking in the commonsense department though.

Why not? We're holding men in Guantanamo without a trial until the end of time and they committed no crime at all that we can prove.

By that standard, North Korea has done nothing wrong.

Thank you for that silly little analysis, Dr Phil.

But I think I need to point this out again...

That's gotta chafe at least a little.

They know other countries exist, they have to guard the border in order to keep the poor starving people of South Korea out and this N. Korean documentary shows how people live in America today.

There was a guy in my area from Miamisburg Ohio that was held in N. Korea for leaving a bible in a night club restroom and it was a big news story here, this kid was from Wyoming Ohio about 25 miles away so he should have known better.

You're welcome. But I don't need Dr. Phil to tell me that it's wrong to take pleasure in others' misfortune, or that if avoiding trouble is your main goal in life you're on the wrong path.

Most of you seem to be so happy that this kid got what he deserved. But he is a kid don't forget. And what if he was your kid. Would you be this happy. Most of us, if not all did really stupid things at his age

It's a harsh punishment, but that is not the point.

When you travel to another country, it is your responsibility to be informed about the everyday laws and customs of that country. Given the reputation that North Korea has, it boggles my mind why someone wouldn't be extra cautious.
