Exactly. I think the drug problem in the Phillippines is much bigger than we know. Maybe Duterte's way is the only way. He's looking at Singapore and Malaysia. Maybe what works there can work here, he thinks. But first you have to get there.
As for US/Philippine relations, they don't need us. We don't need them. China is the regional power, like Russia in the Middle East. They call the shots and its up to the locals to get on their good side.

While Visayans is the largest ethnic group. the capitol region and the main basis for the official language Filipino is that of the Tagalogs around Manila. His first language is Cebuano. As a Mayor and Representative Davao City is the third largest so it would be like the Mayor of Chicago rising to the US presidency.
