His family split their time between Cebu region in the Visayans and the Davao region of on the eastern coast Mindanao, the Muslim region is in the west of Mindanao. While Visayans is the largest ethnic group. the capitol region and the main basis for the official language Filipino is that of the Tagalogs around Manila. His first language is Cebuano. As a Mayor and Representative Davao City is the third largest so it would be like the Mayor of Chicago rising to the US presidency.
He is still nominally Catholic but claims to be among those who were sexually abused by Catholic Priest. He has one testi-lie annulment and is separated from his second wife and currently lives with a girlfriend with who he has one child. His daughter carries the official First Lady responsibilities. He is pro government funding of birth control and all civil and marriage rights for the LGBT community. Half of his eight grandchildren are Muslim.
That would explain alot of his endless anti-American babbling. Mindanao has historically been the least pro-American region of the Philippines. IIRC it is also a hotspot for the communist insurgency that has been ongoing since the late 1960s. Philippine communists have been very vocal in opposing friendly ties to the US, but yet they have no problem with Manila taking orders from Beijing
oh good. the 'little brown people' card has been played
The poster was using the expression in a tongue in cheek manner. It was in bad taste though, I will agree on that.
That said, it become plainly obvious that many countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America, etc cannot govern themselves. This is a discussion we need to have. The reality is that the post-WW2 decolonization process has been a colossal disaster that replaced relative stability with a large number of failed countries. Independence came way to soon and in some cases should not have happened at all.
I think the present position of British overseas territories is an example of what should have happened. The territories have a significant (and in some cases almost total) level of self government over domestic matters while the UK handles defense, foreign affairs, and certain functions normally performed by a 'national' government (ie: UK Supreme Court, customs/immigration, specialist police assistance, technical support, etc). They are British citizens the same as someone who lives in London or Glasgow or Cardiff. It's a system that works. Nobody can possibly argue that Bermuda or the Cayman Islands are a colony in the classical sense of the term.

There has also been a Muslim rebellion based in Mindanao.
Does the Communist Party support Duterte? He seems to have an ideology that mixes left (pro-same sex marriage, against Catholic influence) and right (pro-death penalty, hard line against drug trafficking).

You're confused by communists allying themselves with another communist country over a capitalist one?
‘Only China can help Philippines’: Duerte, as rift with US widens
Historically one of the staunchest US allies, the Philippines is pivoting to China, as President Rodrigo Duterte prepares for his first state visit to Beijing, and has proposed not just an economic, but a military partnership with the country’s giant neighbor. https://www.rt.com/news/363103-duter...na-visit-help/
After supporting the fascist Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, supplying ISIS with weapons, dragging your feet in arming the Kurds, illegally taking out Ghaddafi, further woresening relations with Russia, you have managed to alienate yet another key ally - the Philippines.
This seems to be more about their nutbag of a leader than it is about the sentiment of the people of the Philippines. In population surveys they have tended to lean very pro-U.S.
And if China keeps bullying them about water territory rights, then I don't see that growing into a meaningful relationship.

The rating, announced on Thursday, was calculated by deducting the 11 per cent from the 76 per cent of respondents who said they were satisfied with Mr Duterte's presidency, then rounding it off; 13 per cent were undecided.
Just imagine if he comes back with a compromise.....China might become diplomatically opportunistic as the list of faithful US faithful allies shrinks....
So will he be yet another popular politician voted into office that is called a dictator because our puppet government doesn't like him? Its their country.
