Texas authorities said on Monday that a 26-year-old woman who was shot and killed a day earlier by police refused to heed officers’ instructions to drop the replica semi-automatic BB gun that she was pointing at them.
Micah Dsheigh Jester, 26, was shot dead by police in Austin on Sunday.
In a statement to the press on Monday, Austin police said that Jester had in her possession a BB gun and yelled ‘shoot me, shoot me, kill me’ while pointing the weapon at them, according to NBC News.
Police were responding to a 911 call made by Jester’s husband who was complaining about her ‘erratic’ behavior.
He made the call at 3:45am local time on Sunday.
Jester’s husband warned police that his wife had a weapon.
Police said that one of the responding officers, Deborah Lindeman, had a background in mental health training.
The other officer who responded to the call was a three-year veteran of the force.
When the officers approached Jester at her apartment complex in south-central Austin, she aimed her gun at them and began moving toward them.
Police said that Jester refused the officers’ repeated demands to drop the weapon – and then opened fire.
The boyfriend of Jester’s mother, Jason Meeley, told The Austin American-Statesman that she had two children, a 4-year-old girl and a newborn.
‘It was not a justified kill,’ Meeley told the newspaper. ‘They could have used a stun gun on her. They could have Tasered her. They could have done a lot of stuff.’
The two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave while the authorities investigate the incident.
Jester is the sixth person to be shot and killed by Austin police this year, according to the Statesman.
Jester’s sister, Leigha Jester, started a GoFundMe campaign to solicit money to pay for the funeral.
Very sad, but judging by the picture it looks pretty real from a distance, I find the shooting justified.
Hubby warns police she has a weapon....but it's a bb-gun? Holy crap.
If my wife was having a breakdown and had a bb-gun I'd be wrestling it away from her before she got shot and not calling the police saying she's got a weapon.
Time to loot, burn and riot folks. At this point, what difference do facts make anyway?
btw, for the ignorant few, that was SARCASM. Looks like a little chlorine was added to the gene pool.
