January, 2016 - Stephen Miller, who served as Session's communications director, joined Trump's campaign
January, 2016. Sessions joined the campaign as one Trump's top foreign policy advisers and played a prominent role in supporting Trump.
July, 2016 - "Asked by NBC News' Savannah Guthrie on Tuesday whether Russia is behind the hack and release of information and whether they're trying to interfere with the U.S. elections, Obama noted that the FBI is still investigating but also that "experts have attributed this to the Russians.""
August, 2016 - Manafort resigns after coming under fire over "$12.7 million in undisclosed cash payments to him from ex-Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych’s pro-Russian party."
September, 2016 - Carter Page, who was hired as a foreign policy adviser to the Trump campaign, resigned amidst allegations of Russian involvement. It was recently revealed that he’d been colluding with Russian intel officials during the election.
September 2016 - Sessions met with the Russian ambassador "at the height of what U.S. intelligence officials say was a Russian cyber campaign to upend the U.S. presidential race"
It is simply not credible that Sessions and the Russian ambassador were not aware of and did not discuss Russian involvement in the election.
Trying to parse this out as Sessions was "technically" telling the truth as he was only responding to the Russian involvement communications is just ridiculous.
Where is the following:
FRANKEN: "Now, again, I'm telling you this as it's coming out, so you know. But if it's true, it's obviously extremely serious and if there is any evidence that anyone affiliated with the Trump campaign communicated with the Russian government in the course of this campaign, what will you do?"
SESSIONS: "Senator Franken, I'm not aware of any of those activities. I have been called a surrogate at a time or two in that campaign and I didn't have — did not have communications with the Russians, and I'm unable to comment on it."
Did Franken ask Sessions if he had any communications at all in any capacity with Russia? Since there is no law against a senator speaking to Russia, and the subject was the campaign speaking to Russia, Sessions properly replied "no", because his communications was not as a member of the campaign, but as a senator and member of the Armed Services Committee.
As much as I would love Sessions to be forced out, this is probably the biggest BS going, and is displaying just how petty those against Trump, from both parties, are getting.
To lie: Intentionally and knowingly say a falsehood.
Obama was given bad advice that turned out to not be true. There is no evidence that he knew you would not be able to keep your doctor when he said that. That is not a lie.
Sessions said something that is factually incorrect. He met with the Russians and said he did not. That is a lie.
Sessions was answering questions related to possible Russian meddling in our political process, specifically the Trump campaign. Why would Sessions assume the questions were about his Senate duties?
How many people met Russian ambassadors between Jan 2016 to Nov 2016 from both sides. I would say all of them should recuse themselves from any investigating to Russian interference with elections.
Certainly all of who were involved in Trump's campaign should recuse themselves as they will likely be called to testify in the hearings that are just now getting underway.
How many times on this site over the past month have I read something along the lines of "Trump "may" have "potentially"................."if" that is the case then it "may very well" be cause for impeachment."
There's nothing. Everyone knows what his role in committees were, everyone knows what questions were asked during his confirmation hearings and everyone knows how he answered.
But we're no longer talking about Trumps' great speech in Congress the other night now, are we?
Sessions scheduled to hold a press conference this afternoon.
"Sessions was clearly asked whether there was anyone “affiliated with the Trump campaign” who communicated with the Russian government during the campaign."
"Sessions admitted that he fit this definition of being affiliated with the campaign — as a surrogate (and, really, a top adviser as well) — and said he “did not have communications with the Russians.”
I think Trump is the symptom of a bigger problem, like how the Russian government can co opt US generals and senators. The US political system needs a massive purge if the Russians can get this level of influence in the US government.
There's been some backtracking and denials. Sessions apparently now doesn't remember exactly what he talked with the Russian ambassador about.
“There’s just not strong recollection of what was said,” one Justice Department official.
But that might not even be true as an anonymous Trump administration official told John Harwood on Wednesday night that the election was indeed discussed, but only in “superficial” terms and it wasn't the “substance of their discussion.”
Pivot/deflection? If twas true, would be better than a non-response. Just saying.
