Venezuela's economy is in private hands. There is nothing socialist about that country. https://youtu.be/le86H7Xfjrc

Pitting one half of the lower class against the other (even lower) half has been a very successful formula for the upper classes pursuit of unfettered capitalism. Of course we have a democratic system in place which offers us an opportunity to challenge the notion of a plutocracy, but, in order for that bit of intrusive democracy to rein in the worst of capitalism's tendencies we need to have economic/social solidarity among the middle and lower classes. Something we don't have, and never will.

The fact of our mandatory giving to those on the bottom insures a division of interests among the entire working class political base, and--voila, the power of a united workers potential has been undermined and bogged down in class warfare disputes. It isn't that these forms of divisive constructs are intentionally shaped up to create the division among the lower classes, but the net effect makes it seem so, and, let's face it, it does work. We also have a far ranging demographic with their hand in the government cookie jar, from the homeless to the top corporate entities. But the media's focus is largely on the lower classes take, and lest it be forgotten, the media IS big business.

Criticism of the economic status quo has become a new sport in America, from those who seem to have little else to occupy their time, to the professional critics in the media, the cacophony of government criticism has taken first place in the national forum. In other words--the division has done it's job. At the present juncture, it seems as though there are no answers, just a ton of dissent on both sides of the table, but, on closer scrutiny we see that there is indeed great progress at the federal level of government. The destruction of the EPA, the deregulation lobby gaining ground, insurance corps assuring their "place" in the national debate over healthcare, and the elevation of fear as an insurance policy for the continuation of super profitable defense contracting..Yes, our government IS working, even with all that dissent (theater) the boys in DC carry on with the real agenda---takin care of bidness.....

Because failure to thrive lowers expectations and stifles individual initiative.

A lot of folks who were content working simple jobs that got them by and are now gone forever simply have no idea as to how they can do any better than they once did. They watched their parents get ahead, so they did the same things, but nothing happened for them.

They don't know why that happened, and they don't have any way to learn anything different, because there's nothing in their culture than gives the a clue as where to begin learning what they need to know now. And they are uncomfortable being among people who know things they don't.

Adjusting to the realities that an old job is gone forever is hard to do. It's a lot easier to just think that the jobs will come back through some mysterious magic and hope that happens, so they won't have to change their ways.

They resent those who learned how to adjust to the new realities of the 21st century or who weren't hit as hard by the slow sinking of the middle class as they were. They don't like being called dumb, because they're not. They don't like being called lazy, because they're not.
They just don't know how to do anything to help themselves now. They would learn, if they could, but they can't figure out what they need to learn first, or where to learn it. And they don't want anyone holding their hand and showing them the way, because they are proud of who they are, and would rather not change a thing.

So they wanted their frustration and anger to be known. Trump became their voice. He gave them the magic they want so desperately, and promised to fix it all up for them.

Keep in mind that those on the far-right tend to assume that any nation that pays lip-service to leftist ideals counts as "examples of what liberals like." This is how we get silliness like people thinking paying taxes = socialism = communism = USSR. Every single step on that transitive property chain is completely wrong - none of them are equivalent- but there you go. Most "leftist" nations are just dictatorships that pay lip-service to leftist ideals, just as the "Republic" of China is not actually a republic in the sense we think of in in this nation. And this doesn't even get into the fact that "liberals" in this nation aren't even interested in communism because everyone knows that doesn't work anyway. We'd just be happy if people stopped trying to shove their religion into law, stopped hating minorities, and stopped pretending big business was sacred and should never be held accountable for anything.

all I see now are people wanting to be pampered/ protected at someone elses expense and helicopter parented by Uncle Sam. Pitiful.

Yep, actually it WAS a myth. The Homestead Act gave free land to people who would farm it for five years - full title, fee simple ownership beside. I've actually got two nephews who want to get into farming. Where can my nephews get that kind of deal. Land for nothing beyond simply farming it for five years - cuz "chicks" sure don't come for free! (not to be sexist, just the lyrics to an 80s song by Dire Straits).

Also, rural electrification of the early to mid 20th century. Government program, tax dollars at work. The free market would NEVER have found it profitable without government spending to set up so much infrastructure to serve so few customers.

"let the buyer beware" - a principle that people are expected to have full knowledge of a product before they buy it, used by big business interests to oppose.... safe food and drugs. Because you know, the average person should have the same knowledge of chemicals in foods and drugs as the manufacturer does?
