There is an influential Russian textbook that emerged after the collapse in the Soviet Union by Aleksandr Dugin that received a lot of attention in Russian military and intelligence circle called "foundations of geopolitics". It actually outlines an entire foreign policy agenda for Russia in a post soviet world, arguing that it must still vie with the west in a great game for spheres of influence. Key objectives cited as part of this agenda include:-
  • The United Kingdom should be cut off from Europe.
  • Ukraine should be annexed by Russia because "Ukraine as a state has no geopolitical meaning, no particular cultural import or universal significance, no geographic uniqueness, no ethnic exclusiveness, its certain territorial ambitions represents an enormous danger for all of Eurasia and, without resolving the Ukrainian problem, it is in general senseless to speak about continental politics".
  • The book stresses the "continental Russian–Islamic alliance" which lies "at the foundation of anti-Atlanticist strategy". The alliance is based on the "traditional character of Russian and Islamic civilization".
  • Russia needs to create "geopolitical shocks" within Turkey. These can be achieved by employing Kurds, Armenians and other minorities.
  • China, which represents a danger to Russia, "must, to the maximum degree possible, be dismantled". Dugin suggests that Russia start by taking Tibet–Xinjiang–Mongolia–Manchuria as a security belt.
  • Russia should use its special services within the borders of the United States to fuel instability and separatism, for instance, provoke "Afro-American racists". Russia should "introduce geopolitical disorder into internal American activity, encouraging all kinds of separatism and ethnic, social and racial conflicts, actively supporting all dissident movements – extremist, racist, and sectarian groups, thus destabilizing internal political processes in the U.S. It would also make sense simultaneously to support isolationist tendencies in American politics".
Does any of this ring a bell? Putin is literally going down the checklist.

This textbook is widely circulated at the academy of the general staff, an elite military academy whose students enter at the rank of at least lieutenant-colonel having already distinguished themselves as officers. Most enrolled here enter aged in their early 30s. These are the top military talent of Russia and this vehemently anti-western geopolitical treatise is considered essential reading.

You couldn't make this stuff up.

EU and Canada can have China if they want. African countries are dealing with China and, if the NY Times and the BBC are to be believed, most have serious regrets.

China isn't another version of the US. Chinese commerce is all about bleeding the other party white; that's why the US and the west are in this situation. Under Mao, China developed a complete disregard for the rule of law and substituted it with a winner-take-all attitude mixed with outright lies and obfuscation. The Russians are crazy for getting in bed with China.

The US has always stood for relatively benign large-company commerce with a large dose of cultural values that rubbed many foreign elites as boorish and crass. Enjoy China my friends. Send a postcard.

"Simply relying on the unemployment rate as an indicator of the health of the job market masks underlying problems, many of which have persisted for decades."
You just made the case for Trump.

"increasing numbers of individuals lack the skills necessary to perform today’s jobs." Do you think everybody is cut out to be an electronics engineer, a python programmer, an accountant, a chemist. There are lots of people who are simply not good at book learning. They deserve jobs, too, or are we going to condemn them to a life of flipping burgers and taking government handouts.

There used to be jobs for these people. It was in a factory assembling products; but the elites sent those jobs to China and Vietnam in the name of progress.

It was mowing a lawn, but everyone in those jobs only speaks Spanish now and carries some sort of fake ID.

Get over it. Global trade impoverished America and the poor and unskilled are the first to feel it.

Interesting list. Meanwhile a former factory worker in Dayton is collecting 'disability' for an injury that may not exist while the crew mowing the landscape at the med center barely speak English. A kid in an urban ghetto sees high school grads not finding steady work. A designer has his products copied by a factory in Shenzheng.

That's reality. Some 5th dimensional chess exercise by some Russian academic 30 years ago coming true is speculation. If he knew so much, why didn't he buy a few shares in the stock market?

You mean the way the UK is in the midst of Brexit and leaving France, Germany, and Italy to deal with the 10 year perpetual crisis of the EU alone?

The way that Italy and France and UK don't want to take migrants while Germany feels a humanitarian duty?

You mean the way Canada, France, Germany, Italy, United Kingdom cozying up to Japan's main rival, China?

You mean the way France, Germany and Italy cut each other's throat during EU's agricultural policy negotiations?

You mean the way Canada and the UK will soon negotiate separate trade deals with the same party and get played off each other?

The G6 are a collection of competing states.

You know, I was thinking a bit about it today - and just in case it informs any of the Trumpies out there....

Our problems do not come from trade deficits....just like they don't come from low wages, terrible benefits, etc.....

Firstly, some are relative peanuts...secondly, what really put us behind are really really YUGE expenditures that eventually get passed onto ALL of us. Here are some fairly recent examples:

The Vietnam War partially caused the Nixon Shock and the decoupling of our money from Gold. We simply spent money we didn't have - and have been spending it since (Vets, etc.).

The Wars of Choice have cost many TRILLIONS.

Health Care costs us at least an extra TRILLION per year...over and above what civilized countries pay for better care.

Add to this unlimited money for the Security State and populist notions like "tax cuts" (from debt and deficit) and the brainwashing of the masses to make them feel as if it's all their fault of the fault of brown, black or Muslim people somewhere else.

Trump has absolutely no idea what he is doing...NONE of it is the least big conservative, liberal or centrist. It is simple Populism (doing what he thinks will make uneducated people cheer him)....and it is chaos.

There truly is a world order and much of it is a GOOD thing. It's strange how all the same people who have said that free trade is the real answer to constant wars....many of them support Trump! These people sell out (Kudlow) or change so quickly it makes your head spin.

We have real problems in this country starting with the medical costs and the Military Industrial Complex...and then extended to the Wall Street con men and banksters. But, no, it's some Mexican somewhere making things bad......right?

And no, a country which accounts for only 4% of the world population, can not afford to alienate other countries.

Fortune 50 is an irrelevant measure because the real strength of an economy comes from its small and medium-sized firms, not the big ones.
Good luck with those views.
