It's impossible to negotiate with people who are unwilling to come to the table and compromise (*cough* Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer)
It's impossible to negotiate with someone (*cough* *cough* Trump) who agrees on a deal with the (R) House and the (R) Senate so that everyone can go home and then backs out of it what? two days later?
Those federal employees considered essential and required to continue working without pay, are entitled to work part-time if they can find work that doesn't conflict with their federal work schedule, but they are not entitled to receive unemployment benefits.
In most if not all cases when federal employees MAY receive back-pay, the state will legally recover any unemployment benefits they paid out for the back-paid period.
In summary, there's no financial remedy for federal employees that actually do work for our federal government during Trump's shut-down.
Anyone who works, whether or not paid, even doing volunteer work, is INELIGIBLE for unemployment benefits. This is a hard and fast rule. The issue is ABLE and AVAILABLE. When someone works, volunteers, goes to school, is a caregiver, or is otherwise occupied, whether or not paid, they are not Able and Available to look for and accept other work and therefore ineligible.
So, yes, essential federal employees working without pay have no remedy in the unemployment benefit world.

No, Trump opened the meeting with "Are you going to agree to the wall." When Pelosi said no, Trump walked out.
That's NOT negotiating - that's throwing down the gauntlet - and then taking your ball and going home.
Saying "No" is not negotiating. That is an open admission that she has no intention of compromise. Maybe she should have said "I could agree to some amount of wall if you could agree to some of our demands". That is negotiating.
"If we don't get what we want, one way or the other, whether it's through you, through our military, or anything you wanna call, I will shut down the government. And I'll tell you what, I'm proud to shut down the government for border security, Chuck ... So I will take the mantle. I will be the one to shut it down, I'm not going to blame you for it."
-- Donald Trump on December 11, 2018
So conservatives... is it a comprehension problem with you? Do you not understand some of the words? Or are you just dishonest?
Or are you basically saying Trump's word is garbage?..
You can spin lies, but the truth is that Donald proudly took ownership of the shutdown on December 11, 2018, and it's there for every reasonable person of sound mind to reference until the end of time. Donald is the one who took 800K workers and their families hostage to try to get his demands.

Why do you ask questions to which the answers are obvious?
If the food stamp halt happens, that’s going to have a helluva ripple effect as well. Some 40 Milllion people use those benefits at the grocery store. Ever been to a Winco on the first? This is going to hit their bottom line like crazy. If it keeps up, they start laying off cashiers who can no longer go out to Denny’s etc...
Update on this. I just heard on C-Span that AG Dept. has found money to pay food stamps for another month. So, hopefully, the crisis will be postponed.

Same can be said for walking out of a room. Trump holds himself out to be a master negotiator. With all his bragged about skills, surely - if he REALLY wanted to reopen government, he would have a comeback for this in order to keep the talks going.
This is HIS SHUTDOWN. He said two weeks ago he would OWN IT. Therefore, it is on him to FIX IT.
He needs to make the first move. Because he started it.
He had legislation which he said he would sign. Then he refused.
This mess is of his own making. It's up to him to fix it.
