Yes, It's called being in a society. Is it morally responsible to expect your neighbor to send their son or daughter off to die in a war to protect you when your kids are abled bodied?

I would rather live in a civilized society.. then a society based on Me, Me, Me.

That concept went out the window in the 14th century..

I would say welfare is a safety net that can help a lot of people when they get down and out, social programs like healthcare ,affordable education and child care are beneficial to society.

14th century.....no, societies worked together way before that. Look at how ancient Israel ran their country. They worked as a society, which funded a military, public works, temples etc through taxes. Ancient Egypt did the same. Same with Greece, Rome, and every other civilization back in the day.

No. I would feel bad if others paid my bills as I am able to work and pay my way. But, with the typo in the third option, I wouldn't mind the gift of a nice Angus herd bull.

So, you can afford your own military and police force to defend yourself? Can you afford to build your own roads?

I think people who don't want to work should be paid to stay home and stay out of the way of folks who like work. A case in point: There was a factory that used certain tax credits to hire hard core unemployed, drug offenders and guys newly released from the state prison.

It was said that the production scrap rate was over 40%. That is 40% of what was produced at this facility didn't pass mustard. When the economy turned down and the corporate office had to downsize, guess which facility was at the top of the list to get closed? All the hard working people who liked to do good work lost their jobs, homes , cars and for some their families. The people who were there just taking up space never missed a beat. They just went back into criminal activity or back on the dole.

If all of you republicans feel so strongly about the "free stuff", feel free to reimburse Social Security for all of the years that you've been getting checks and reimburse Medicare for your hospital stays.

He didn't say anything about taxation, it's what is done with some of the taxes that he obviously has a problem with.

I live in Boston and pay around $8k a year in property taxes with the majority going to the schools. Even though I have no children in those schools I don't have a problem with educating other people's kids. That is the price of a civil society. The problem for me is that I am feeding them too. I'm also housing and clothing a huge portion of them as well. If you cannot have children without using tax money to this extent then you should not be having them.
