If 20 dead first and second graders at Sandy Hook Elementary School didn't move legislatures to revise gun safety and ownership requirements in this country, nothing will.
Knee jerk legislation is often more damaging in the long term than whatever it is designed to prevent or keep us safe from. Cooler heads should always prevail in the wake of emotional events that can cause people to lose their wits temporarily and make decisions that logic would show to be unwise. A two week mandatory waiting period between an event and legislation designed to prevent future occurrences of that event would ensure that at least some of the initial knee jerk tendencies are taken out of the decision making. It would also prevent politicians from taking advantage of tragedies to further their pre-existing agendas.
Why? There isn't even legislation designed to prevent recurrence even TWO YEARS after the event. hell, there isn't any legislative action on this EVER because the only altar at which NRA and conservatives worship is unrestrained weapons proliferation. So I'm not sure what knee jerk legislation you expect to see. All I expect to see is more of the exact same status quo.

Not a good idea to pack defenseless children into unsecured spaces. I blame the inherently dangerous govt schools and a lack of security for the tragedy.
It is rather odd that some are always proposing waiting periods for some things (abortion, legislation, etc..) while at the same time thinking people should be able to have immediate access to guns.
None of those waiting period proposals involve a constitutionally protected right.

Perhaps you should realize that abortion isn’t addressed in the constitution. (Note, I have no issue with abortion as long as the government isn’t providing or paying for it)

But something you seem to be overlooking -- none of the gun control legislation being proposed is 'new'...it really isn't any knee jerk reaction. The proposed legislation have been proposed many times over the years. That's hardly a knee jerk reaction.
Of course it isn’t new. Progressives have a stock of proposals ready to go, waiting for their next chance to infringe on our rights by taking advantage of tragedy.
It seems they have had more than 2 weeks. McConnell needs to come back and do his job.
Perhaps the people who wrote the legislation should go back and write some that would actually be effective and constitutional.

Just reading the pro gun no matter what comments here tells you why a sensible solution to the murder by guns issue is as it is. So many nuts out there think there should be absolutely no restriction to guns for anyone. It blows my mind to think there are so many crazy people in the US. Even more frightening to think these people also likely possess guns.
Over 857 million law-abiding gun owners did not shoot anyone today.
