How did you become interested in politics? (lawyers, regular, Rudy Giuliani)

i would say from quite a young age mainly my family , my family were big labour supporters so would regularly support them and i got involved with them.

I became very interested in federal politics when I graduated college and began paying federal taxes. I got interested in local politics when I had children and became interested in schools.

Now I'm just a voter and not terribly interested in politics. what will be will be.

I'm too old to worry about what happens 20 years from now in federal politics and follow this forum only. No twitter. No facebook.

the future of politics is up to younger voters and that is fine by me.

My mother’s side of the family were Democrats, and my father’s side were Republicans. It made for a lot of interesting family gatherings. Though, back then, it was different than it is now. The conversations were always civil, academic, and everyone got along really well. But from a very young age, I got to hear a lot of political conversations from both sides.

A lot of them were lawyers, and my maternal grandfather was a judge and held several political offices prior to that. I, myself, started college as a political science major, but I ended up liking science better, so I changed course.

I became interested when I saw the impact that Rudy Giuliani's policies were having on crime and quality of life in NYC. It was rough growing up in Brooklyn for a while. But Giuliani changed a lot of that, big time. When Democrats would criticize Giuliani's policies, that was the first time I looked at how politics shape policy. And it was clear for me what side I wanted to be on in that particular debate.

I've always been an idealist from a young age, and very interested in justice and building better societies. (A sentiment which many would find perplexing given my political evolution.) I studied politics from high school on as a mechanic would study a car engine. My thought was and still is, "The world is a big machine. I want to know how it works."

I still want to be politically involved but know I don't have the temperament for a public role. Maybe as a rationalization of that self-knowledge, I've come to believe politics is mostly won in the trenches decades before the big battles are fought, by people who never get any credit and often don't set out with political goals. Politicians are just attention grabbers who ride the coattails of others.
