Let's also add that more Republicans than Democrats, as a percent, voted for Civil Rights too. So should we start tearing down all the MLK statues and renaming all the MLK Blvds' so the Dems can erase that too?

No wonder Dr. King was said to be a Republican (by his own family memebers).

History is on the side of Republicans, and the Dems/Libs have been trying to erase history and call Republicans racists to bamaboozle Americans who don't know their history.

Never fear, I'm here to keep the record intact, and remind people every time a significant historical date arises...like today.
So you would consider the Republicans of 1860 to be the conservative party? They wanted a stronger federal government than the states rights Democrats. Now does that sound like a Republican to you? How bout the suspension of Habeas Corpus?

And what do you mean "we" did the right thing? No one from that period is alive today so it's ridiculous to claim you have done anything but post ridiculous right wing propaganda on an anonymous internet forum.

Who rejoiced when President Lincoln was assassinated?
Native Americans. Northern troops were told by Lincoln to kill them, men, women and children. You can find this in the civil war dispatches.

The divide over the question of what were the origins of the secession attempt of 1860 is not right/left but has its roots in history and how the union was formed. The right of secession was an issue from the moment the USA was founded due to the manner in which the Articles of Confederation was replaced with the new Constitution, which resulted in a shift of power from the states to a national (Federal) government. It is an ongoing scholarly debate among American historians.

I personally have no opinion on the matter but I find the history interesting.

Maybe so but the democrats have never lost their way - they are still the racist and slavery toting party.

Yes, President Lincoln's assassination came later, one would think this would go without saying here?

Historical context alert:

Were Republicans really the party of civil rights in the 1960s?

Once you control for region, it turns out that Democrats were actually more likely to support the 1964 Civil Rights Act

Quote:
You don't need to know too much history to understand that the South from the civil war to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 tended to be opposed to minority rights. This factor was separate from party identification or ideology. We can easily control for this variable by breaking up the voting by those states that were part of the confederacy and those that were not.

...You can see that geography was far more predictive of voting coalitions on the Civil Rights than party affiliation.

...In this case, it becomes clear that Democrats in the north and the south were more likely to vote for the bill than Republicans in the north and south respectively. This difference in both houses is statistically significant with over 95% confidence. It just so happened southerners made up a larger percentage of the Democratic than Republican caucus, which created the initial impression than Republicans were more in favor of the act.

Not to mention the present day right wing libertarian, neoconfederates, et al who still resist the Civil Right Acts & Civil Rights movement.

The Republicans in threads like these are so brainwashed they don't even realized their attacking conservatism just because conservatism could be found more in the Democratic party at the time than the Republican, big government/ big city, anti-states rights policies.

mostly on this forum POC german NAZIs are called socialist and the Conservative Democrats of yesterday are confused with later day civil rights democrats..this is the garbage simpleton on the surface take on history that the right-wing talk shows spew out....and it just makes their other opinions and post less valid as they smugly inform us lol

City-Data has a History thread as well where more knowledge posts reside...interestingly one thread started in 2007 shows that some of this bad info has been put out in the last few years...

The modern day Republican Party is virtually the Democrat Party of the 1860's. I don't know why we have to continue saying the Republicans freed the slaves and Democrats were against it...

Republicans today are changing the course of history but, NOT by using any compassion. My dad's republican party is gone.
Who would have thought it would be democrats trying to uphold the constitution and the republicans trying to protect a president who cares nothing of the constitution. The times they are a changing.

No modern president has ever vilified black Americans and sought to divide people along racial lines like Mr. Trump, while also outlandishly claiming to be a champion of their interests. And now we have Trumpers boasting they and he are to be compared to Abe Lincoln while rewriting history and current events

Make no mistake, this is absurd and obvious. And disgusting.

Anyone can talk, but can you provide evidence to show how Trump is doing all these things? Or are we just supposed to take your word for it? I view Trump as an equal opportunity offender. If he doesn't like you, you will know about it, because he is not afraid to show it or call out your foolishness.
