Unless you have a very expensive safe, these "safes" are easily defeated. Especially wood cabinets. We don't need victim blaming. They took the firearm.
There is no "quick access" security box. Whatever the heck that refers to. Even digital safes error all the time, just like your phone. When the cops have used them for years, I will too.
It seems like you are making this up as you go.
1. A wood cabinet is not a gun safe.
2. There most certainly are quick access safes and security boxes.
Given the example quoted, is one going to be so disarmed so an Elizabeth Smart type kidnapping happens....for the example quoted?
In our world of 20/20 armchair QBs, damned if you do, damned if you don't.
I'm using the example of what happened in the title thread. Originally it was framed as if the guy's home was broken into by the teens, who stole the gun sitting on a shelf in plain view, but now it turns out the teens were staying with him. In hindsight it was foolish to leave a gun in plain view when there are teens or kids in the house. Do you live in such a crime-ridden area that you'd be dead if the gun isn't sitting at the ready by the front door? It couldn't have been moved to a place where the teens didn't see where it was? It's too dangerous where you live to even do that?

Maybe. The Ranch House is configured for such possibilities, of ready lockers by each entry door with guns for vermin and "Philistines". Now, the state of those ready lockers at any particular time is a matter of internal security and not open for discussion.
I'd say it depends on the household but like I tell my older Brother, "If you find a gun in my house outside the Cat Cave, it is loaded with one in the pipe.".
Now, if kids are around.....different ballpark. Inside my own house, it has not been a concern. When I have stayed with relatives with children in the past, the guns have been locked with their keys around my throat.
Now, to that point, what if a gun is stolen with its cable lock intact but the young crooks take it off with cable cutters......is the owner still responsible?

I don't think so. He was charged with failing to secure the gun. But the best scenario would have been to keep it where the kids couldn't see it.
The law says, if you know juveniles are in your home, you need to make your guns inaccessible to them, and out of sight. Honestly, I think in this case that would have included just putting the gun in a drawer under some sweaters.
If they were there "at all", they'd know where every firearm was. Come one, it's like saying you have to hide your car keys. Unless you have a VERY expensive gun safe it's just a joke.
What use is a firearm in your home if it's behind a giant piece of metal.
Analogy: she had a short skirt on. If she just hid her G string underwear......

Do teens in your home, guests of your kids, know what's in your underwear drawer?
